Wheel Bearings and Duo-Cone Seals - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the tires and rims. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove" .
  2. Remove the final drive planet carriers and the ring gears. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove" .
  3. Remove the brake caliper assembly. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Remove" .


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to attach a suitable hoist to the ring gear. The assembly has a weight of 23 kg (50 lb). Remove the bolts that hold retainer (1) . Remove retainer (1) and the shims from the end of the spindle.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to attach a suitable hoist to wheel hub assembly (2) .

  1. Remove hub assembly (2) from spindle (4) . The wheel hub assembly has a weight of 190 kg (420 lb) .

    Note: After the hub assembly is removed from the spindle, the inner hub is free to separate from the hub assembly. The inner hub can fall from the wheel hub assembly.

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Duo-Cone seal (8) .

  1. Remove bearing (3) from spindle (4) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to attach a suitable hoist to the hub assembly. Remove the top bolt in order to attach Tooling (A) .

  1. Remove 18 bolts (5) and the washers. Remove 2 brake mounting plates (6) . Remove spindle (4) . The weight of spindle (4) is 34 kg (75 lb) .

  1. Remove O-ring (7) from spindle (4) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Duo-Cone seal (8) .

  1. Separate inner hub (9) from wheel hub assembly (2) . The inner hub has a weight of 41 kg (90 lb) .

  1. Bearing (10) may remain on either inner hub (9) or in wheel hub assembly (2) . Remove bearing (10) .

  1. Remove bearing cups (11) and remove bearing cups (12) .

  1. Remove 32 bolts (13) . Separate brake rotor (14) from wheel hub assembly (2) .

    Note: Mark the relationship between the rotor and the wheel hub assembly for balance consideration when you assemble the assembly.
