  1. Install inner hub (9) and ring gear in wheel hub assembly (2) .

    Illustration 5g00520628

  1. Make sure that the rubber toric seals are clean and dry. Make sure that all metal surfaces that make contact with the rubber toric seals are clean and dry. Use Tooling (B) in order to install Duo-Cone seal (8) in the retainer. Put a small amount of clean SAE 30W oil on the metal surfaces that make contact. See Special Instruction, "Assembly and Installation of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals" .

  1. Install O-ring (7) on spindle (4) .

    Illustration 7g00520626

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to attach a suitable hoist to spindle (4) . Spindle (4) has a weight of 33 kg (73 lb) .

  1. Use 18 bolts (5) in order to attach two brake mounting plates and spindle (4) to the axle housing.

Note: Make sure that the Duo-Cone seals are not damaged during the installation and make sure that the seals are kept clean and dry.

  1. Install bearing (3) on spindle (4) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to attach a suitable hoist to wheel hub assembly (2) . Wheel hub assembly has a weight of 125 kg (276 lb) .

  1. Make sure that the rubber toric seals are clean and dry. Make sure that all metal surfaces that make contact with the rubber toric seals are clean and dry. Use Tooling (B) in order to install Duo-Cone seal (8) in the seal seat of wheel hub assembly (2) . Put a small amount of clean SAE 30W oil on the metal surfaces that make contact.

  1. Install wheel hub assembly (2) on spindle (4) .

  1. Measure the thickness of retainer (1) at the three small holes in the retainer. Find the average of the three measurements.

  1. Use only three bolts in order to install retainer (1) without the shims. Install the bolts next to the three small holes that were used for the measurements. Tighten the three bolts to a torque of 100 N·m (75 lb ft). Turn wheel hub assembly (2) for several revolutions and tighten the bolts again to a torque of 100 N·m (75 lb ft) .

  1. Loosen the three bolts. Tighten the three bolts again to a torque of 25 N·m (18 lb ft). Turn the wheel hub assembly (2) for several revolutions. Repeat this procedure until the bolt torque stays at 25 N·m (18 lb ft) .

    Illustration 10g00521038

  1. Use a depth micrometer (17) in order to measure the distance to the end of the spindle through the three small holes. Find the average of the three measurements.

  1. Subtract the average measurement that was found in Step 13 from the average measurement that was found in Step 16. This is the gap between the end of the spindle and the retainer.

    Illustration 11g00521049

  1. Make up shim pack (18) with a thickness equal to the gap that was found in Step 17 plus 0.20 mm (.008 inch) .

    Illustration 12g00521077

  1. Install shim pack (18) , retainer (1) , and the bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 150 N·m (110 lb ft) .

End By:

  1. Install the final drive planet carriers and the ring gears. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install" .
  2. Install the brake caliper assembly. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Install" .
  3. Install the tire and rim. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Install" .
