  1. If clamps (22) were removed from the rear axle shaft, position two clamps (22) away from the outboard end of the axle. Two clamps (22) should be a distance of 1735 ± 5 mm (68.3 ± 0.2 inch) away from the outboard end of the axle.

Note: The left axle and the right axle are different lengths. The different lengths do not affect Dimension (D) on the left axle. Dimension (D) is 1735 ± 5 mm (68.3 ± 0.2 inch) for the left axle.

Note: Before installation, use a 5/16 - 18 tap in order to clean the thread lock compound from the threads of the clamps.

  2. Use four bolts (21) to install two clamps (22). Before installation, apply 7M-7456 Compound to the threads. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 30 ± 4 N·m (22.13 ± 2.95 lb ft). Stake the bolts.

  3. Install Tool (B) on rear axle shaft (20).

  4. Use a suitable hoist to lift rear axle shaft (20). Slide the splined end into the final drive housing. Slide the splined end through the ring for the rear wheel speed sensor.

  5. Align the tangs on clamp (22) and the slots in the ring for the rear wheel speed sensor. The clamp should slide through the ring for the rear wheel speed sensor.

  6. Slide the axle through the ring for the rear wheel speed sensor. Engage the internal splines of the differential.

  12. Install O-ring seal (6) on plug (5). Install the assembly.

  13. Use four bolts (9) to install thrust plate (10).

Note: Before the installation of bolts (9), clean the bolt holes with a M12 - 1.75 tap.

Note: During the installation of bolts (9), tighten the bolts to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44.3 ± 5.2 lb ft).

  14. Use two screws (8) and two washers to install thrust washer (7).

Note: Before the installation of screws (8), clean the bolt holes with a M8 - 1.25 tap.

Note: During the installation of screws (8), apply 4C-4030 Thread Lock Compound to the screws. Tighten the screws to a torque of 28 ± 5 N·m (20.7 ± 3.7 lb ft).

  15. Install O-ring seal (11).

Note: Before installation, apply 1U-6396 O-Ring Assembly Compound to the O-ring seals.

  16. Install two guide bolts (M12 - 1.75 x 200 mm long), as shown.

  17. Use Tool (A) and a suitable hoist to position cover assembly (3) on the guide bolts. Remove Tool (A).

  18. Use ten bolts (4) and ten washers to install cover assembly (3). Remove the guide bolts. Install remaining two bolts (4) and the two washers.

    Note: Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m (73.8 ± 14.8 lb ft).

  19. Install drain plug (1) and gasket (2) if the drain plug and the gasket were not installed earlier.

  20. Fill the final drive with oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct fluid capacities and for the correct filling procedures.
