NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the oil in the power train is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the breather filter cap when the engine is stopped and the breather cap is cool enough to touch by hand.

Slowly loosen the breather filter cap in order to release any pressure in the oil tank. Be careful of hot hydraulic oil when any lines are disconnected from the components of the power train.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: The following procedure shows the removal of the right final drive, brake, and wheel (rear). This procedure is used for the left final drive, brake, and wheel (rear).

Note: Inspect the O-ring seals and spacers. Replace the O-ring seals and spacers that are worn or damaged.

  1. Drain the oil from the service and parking brakes by removing plug (3) and O-ring seal (4). Approximately 76 L (20.1 US gal) of oil must be collected.

  2. Drain the oil from the differential housing. The capacity of the differential housing is approximately 663 L (175.1 US gal).

  3. Remove three bolts (1) and three washers in order to disconnect tube assembly (5).

  14. Use Tool (B) and a suitable hoist to support the weight of final drive, brake, and wheel (rear). The weight of final drive, brake, and wheel (rear) is approximately 7180 kg (15,829.2 lb).

Note: Position a suitable container under the rear spindle in order to collect any oil that is still in the system.

Note: The final drive carriers are removed from the photo above. The removal of the final drive carriers is not necessary for the removal of final drive, brake, and wheel (rear). A manufactured tool is shown in the place of Tool (B).

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can occur from heavy components falling during removal or installation.

Properly support the component with a suitable lifting device during removal or installation.

  15. Remove remaining 41 bolts (30) and 41 washers.

  16. Remove final drive, brake, and wheel (rear) (31) from the machine.

Note: During the handling of the final drive, brake and wheel (rear), protect the final drive, brake, and wheel (rear) from damage and debris.
