Differential and Bevel Gear - Remove

Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".

  2. Remove the front fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".

  3. Remove the rear oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove and Install".

Typical Example

Note: Make sure that the intermediate housing of the differential is positioned on the top when you locate the axle assembly in Tooling (A).

  1. Remove the service brake from the intermediate housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Remove and Install".

  2. Fasten a suitable lifting device to intermediate housing (1). Remove bolts (2) and intermediate housing assembly (1). The weight of intermediate housing (1) is approximately 109 kg (240 lb).

  3. Remove bolt (3) and bolt lock (4).

    Note: Adjusting nuts (5) are of two different sizes. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) to remove the adjusting nuts (5).

  4. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) to remove the adjusting nut (5).

  5. Remove locating pin (7), sleeve assembly (6) and bearing cup (8) from intermediate housing (1).

  6. Remove bolts (9) that are directly opposite each other. Install Tooling (J) in the bolt holes.

  7. Remove remaining bolts (9). Slide pinion gear assembly (10) away from the differential housing to install Tooling (B). Attach a suitable lifting device to pinion gear assembly (10).

  8. Use the hoist to remove pinion gear assembly (10). The weight of the pinion gear assembly is approximately 66 kg (145 lb).

  9. Remove the shims and the O-ring seal from the pinion assembly.

  10. Install Tooling (C) on differential assembly (11). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C).

  11. Use a suitable lifting device to remove differential assembly (11). The weight of the differential assembly is approximately 109 kg (240 lb).

  12. Reposition the remainder of the axle onto the opposite side, as shown. Fasten the differential housing to Tooling (A).

  13. Install Tooling (C) to the rim of axle housing assembly (1). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C).

  14. Remove bolts (13). Use the suitable lifting device to remove axle housing (12). The weight of the axle housing assembly is approximately 295 kg (650 lb).

  15. Remove the service brake from the differential housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes- Remove and Install".

  16. Remove bolt (14) and bolt lock (15).

    Note: Adjusting nuts (5) are of two different sizes. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) to remove the adjusting nuts.

  17. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) to remove the adjusting nut (16).

  18. Remove locating pin (17), sleeve assembly (18), and bearing cup (19) from differential housing (20).

  19. Use Tooling (D) to remove bearing cone (21).

  20. Turn the differential onto the opposite side. Use Tooling (E) to remove bearing cone (22).

  21. Remove bolts (24) that hold bevel gear (25) in position. Use a press to remove bevel gear (25) from the differential.

  22. Remove two spring assemblies (23) from the bevel gear.
