Steering and braking systems of improperly warmed-up machine may respond slower than expected, possibly causing an accident and personal injury. After staring the engine during cold weather, allow the engine to run at approximately 1200 rpm for ten minutes before moving the machine. Drive the machine slowly at first to assure that the steering and braking systems are operating correctly. |

The Caterpillar engine in this machine is equipped with an air inlet heater. The air inlet heater aids in cold weather starting and in reducing white smoke. The Electronic Monitoring Center controls the operation of the air inlet heater. In order to activate the air inlet heater, push the button on the left side of the steering column.
- Move the transmission control lever to the NEUTRAL position.
Note: A safety device prevents the starter motor from operating unless the transmission control lever is in the NEUTRAL position.

- Engage the parking brake.
- Move the implement control levers to the HOLD position.
- Move the governor control lever to the LOW IDLE position.
- Fully depress the inching clutch control.
- Briefly sound the horn in order to alert bystanders.
- Turn the engine start switch to the ON position.

If the engine start switch is turned to the OFF position before attempting to start the engine, or if the engine does not start, allow the heater element to cool for two minutes before the next attempt to start the engine. |
- Press the air inlet heater switch in order to preheat the engine. The cold start indicator will light on the dash panel. This indicates that the air inlet heater is operating. The light will remain on for 10 to 30 seconds. This duration depends on the temperature of the engine coolant.

- Within five seconds after the cold start indicator turns off, turn the engine start switch key to the START position in order to crank the engine. During cranking of the engine, push the governor control lever forward momentarily to the HIGH IDLE position. Next, pull the governor control lever back to the LOW IDLE position. Next, push the governor control lever halfway in the forward direction while you are cranking the engine. Release the key as soon as the engine starts. The key will return to the RUN position. Once the engine starts return the governor control lever to the LOW IDLE position. The air inlet heater can stay on for a period up to 120 seconds in order to provide additional heating. This depends on the temperature of the engine coolant.
- If the engine does not run smoothly, press the air inlet heater switch within ten seconds after the cold start indicator turns off. This provides an additional heating for 30 seconds.

Engine Block Heater
The engine block heater warms the engine coolant in order to aid starting. Use the engine block heater in temperatures below -23°C (-10°F).

In order to operate the engine block heater, plug the heater cord assembly (1) into a 115 volt circuit. The engine block heater should be activated for at least four hours before you start the machine. Store the heater cord assembly in the storage compartment in the cab.

To avoid shocks or other injuries, never use an ungrounded or inadequate extension cord. Use a three-wire extension cord with a three-wire plug which is rated for at least a 15 amp load and is protected by a suitable fuse or circuit breaker. Always inspect the heater electrical cord for worn or frayed insulation before plugging into current. |

Note: Always remove the cord from the heater and return the cord to the storage compartment when you are not using the engine block heater. This will protect the cord from damage that is caused by hot engine components.
The engine block heater can be activated for more than four hours. However, the maximum benefit is usually obtained after the coolant has been heated for four hours.
Hydraulic Oil Heater
The hydraulic system on this machine can be equipped with an oil heater. The optional heater warms the oil that is used by the transmission, by the hydraulic pumps, and by the hydraulic motors. Use the oil heater in temperatures below -23°C (-10°F).
