NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Open the engine hood.

  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator. The capacity of the coolant system is 63 L (17 US gal) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove oil filter (3) from oil filter base (2) . Disconnect oil hose (1) from oil filter base (2) .

  1. Remove two bolts (6) that secure pipe (5) to the engine.

  1. Remove pipe (5) and the O-ring seals from fuel filter base (2) and the engine.

  1. Remove bolt (8) that secures pipe clamp (7) . Clamp (7) secures pipe (4) to the engine. Remove spacer (9) that is under pipe clamp (7) and under bolt (8) .

  1. Remove two bolts (10) from pipe (4) . Remove pipe (4) from the engine and from the oil filter base. Gasket (11) will separate with pipe (4) .

  1. Remove gasket (11) from the lower end of pipe (4) and remove O-ring (12) from the upper end of pipe (4) .

  1. Remove O-ring seals (13) and (14) from pipe (5) .

  1. Remove four bolts (15) and remove oil filter base (2) from the engine.

  1. Remove two O-ring seals (16) from oil filter base (2) .

  1. Turn over the oil filter base and remove hollow stud (17) from oil filter base (2) .

  1. Turn over the oil filter base and remove four bolts (19) and cover (18) from oil filter base (2) .

  1. Remove cap (20) and test port (21) from oil filter base (2) . Remove the O-ring seal from test port (21) .

  1. Remove two springs (23) from oil filter base (2) . Both springs are identical.

  1. Remove gasket (22) from oil filter base (2) .

  1. Remove two plungers (24) from oil filter base (2) . Both plungers are identical.

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  1. Install two plungers (24) to oil filter base (2) . Both plungers are identical.

  1. Install gasket (22) to oil filter base (2) .

  1. Install two springs (23) to oil filter base (2) . Both springs are identical.

  1. Install the O-ring seal to test port (21) . Install cap (20) and test port (21) to oil filter base (2) .

  1. Install four bolts (19) and cover (18) to oil filter base (2) .

  1. Install hollow stud (17) to oil filter base (2) .

  1. Install two O-ring seals (16) to oil filter base (2) .

  1. Position oil filter base (2) to the engine. Install four bolts (15) .

  1. Install gasket (11) to the lower end of pipe (4) and install O-ring (12) to the upper end of pipe (4) .

  1. Install O-ring seals (13) and (14) to pipe (5) .

  1. Position pipe (4) to the engine and to the oil filter base. Gasket (11) will be installed with pipe (4) . Install two bolts (10) to pipe (4) .

  1. Install spacer (9) under pipe clamp (7) and under bolt (8) . Install bolt (8) that secures pipe clamp (7) and pipe (4) to the engine.

  1. Install pipe (5) and the O-ring seals to fuel filter base (2) and the engine.

  1. Install two bolts (6) that secure pipe (5) to the engine.

  1. Connect oil hose (1) to oil filter base (2) . Install oil filter (3) to oil filter base (2) . Check the oil level in the engine. If necessary, add oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the installation procedure and the service intervals.

  1. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the proper procedure.

  1. Close the engine hood.
