The Automatic Retarder Control is activated by moving the control switch to the ON position.

Note: The control switch for the Automatic Retarder Control should remain ON during all normal operation. Select the proper transmission gear for the grade, load and ground condition.

In the selected gear, the Automatic Retarder Control will control the engine speed to the preset rpm (1850 to 1950).

Note: Placing the Automatic Retarder Control in the OFF position will disable the system.

When the transmission shifts to the selected gear and the engine rpm increases to 1800 rpm, the Automatic Retarder Control will apply the brakes in order to maintain the engine speed at the preset rpm (1850 to 1950). The Automatic Retarder Control will not apply the brakes when the engine rpm is below 1800 rpm.

The Automatic Retarder Control can be overridden at any time by depressing the accelerator pedal, applying the manual retarder lever or pressing on the service brake pedal.

Improved Automatic Retarder Control

Note: The following (PIN: 6HK292-293, 308-315, 318-321, 324-328, 333-UP) have an improved ARC with a protective engine overspeed device. The new 113-2643 Automatic Retarder Electronic Control Group is directly interchangeable with the former 105-1888 Electronic Control .

The protective engine overspeed device will continue to operate when the accelerator is depressed and/or the ARC is turned off. The ARC will activate when engine speed reaches 2100 rpm. The ARC applies the brakes in order to prevent engine speed from exceeding 2180 rpm. The ARC will deactivate when engine speed decreases to 2075 rpm.
