Cylinder head gasket |
(1) Dowel pins
The dowel pins in the cylinder block hold the cylinder head gasket in the correct position when the cylinder head is installed.
(2) "Front" is stamped on the gasket in order to ensure the correct alignment of the gasket on the cylinder head.
(3) "Top" is stamped on the gasket in order to ensure the correct alignment of the gasket on the cylinder head.
The labels on the cylinder head gasket ensure the correct orientation of the gasket during installation.

Bolt tightening sequence |
Procedure for tightening the bolts and the nuts in the cylinder head
- Put clean engine oil on the threads of the bolts. Tighten all of the bolts and the nuts finger tight. Tighten the bolts and the nuts in the number sequence in Illustration 2.
Tighten the bolts to the following torque. ... 70 N·m (52 lb ft)
Note: A 14 mm deep well socket is required in order to tighten the nuts on the studs that are numbered 12 through 15.
- Finally, tighten the bolts and the nuts in the number sequence in Illustration 2.
Tighten the bolts and the nuts to the following torque. ... 100 N·m (74 lb ft)
Cylinder head thickness ... 79.95 to 80.05 mm (3.148 to 3.151 inch)
Maximum permissible projection of the fuel injection nozzle below the face of the cylinder head ... 2.7 mm (0.11 inch)

Positions for measuring the flatness of the cylinder head |
Maximum distortion of the cylinder head is given in the following table.
Dimension     | Maximum Permissible Distortion     |
Width "A"     | 0.08 mm (0.003 inch)     |
Length "B"     | 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)     |
Diagonal "C"     | 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)     |
Note: If the cylinder head has been machined, check the valve depth below the cylinder head face. See Specifications, "Cylinder Head Valves". Before any work is done on the valve seats, new valve guides must be installed.
