Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure. |
NOTICE |
---|
Mixing ELC with other products that do not meet Caterpillar EC-1 specifications reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant service life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for pre-mixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Caterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations can result in shortened cooling system component life. |
For information about the addition of Extender to your cooling system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant Extender (ELC) - Add" or consult your Caterpillar dealer.
Flushing a Standard Coolant from the Cooling System
If you change the coolant of a machine to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, use a Caterpillar cleaning agent to flush the cooling system. After you drain the cooling system, thoroughly flush the cooling system with clean water. All of the cleaning agent must be removed from the cooling system.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change" for the draining procedure and for the flushing procedure.
Flushing the Extended Life Coolant from the Cooling System
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Some engines utilize Extended Life Coolant (ELC). If Extended Life Coolant is already used in the machine, flush the cooling system with clean water. No other cleaning agents are required. Use the following procedure to change the Extended Life Coolant.

The Cooling System Pressure Cap is located on the right side of the Engine Hood. |
- Slowly loosen the cooling system pressure cap in order to relieve system pressure.
- Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container. The drain valve for the radiator is located on the bottom of the radiator.

- Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is clean. Close the drain valve.
- Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct amount of coolant.
- Start the engine. Run the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
- Install the cooling system pressure cap.
- Stop the engine.
Drain the Cooling System
- Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool. Ensure that the engine will not start when the cooling system is drained.
- Loosen the cooling system filler cap slowly in order to relieve any pressure. Remove the cooling system filler cap.
- Open the cooling system drain valve. Remove the engine block drain plug. Allow the coolant to drain.
NOTICE |
---|
Dispose of used engine coolant properly or recycle. Various methods have been proposed to reclaim used coolant for reuse in engine cooling systems. The full distillation procedure is the only method acceptable by Caterpillar to reclaim the used coolant. |
For information regarding the disposal and the recycling of used coolant, consult your Caterpillar dealer or consult Caterpillar Service Technology Group:

- After the cooling system has been drained, flush the cooling system with clean water in order to remove any debris.
- Close the cooling system drain valve. Clean the engine block drain plug and install the drain plug.
- Fill the cooling system with clean water. Install the cooling system filler cap. Operate the engine until the temperature reaches 49 °C (120 °F) to 66 °C (150 °F).

Fill the Cooling System
NOTICE |
---|
Fill the cooling system no faster than 19 L (5 US gal) per minute to avoid air locks. |
- Fill the cooling system with Extended Life Coolant (ELC). See this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct cooling system capacity. Do not install the cooling system filler cap.
- Start the engine. Operate the engine in order to purge the air from the cavities of the engine block. Allow the ELC to warm and allow the coolant level to stabilize. Stop the engine.
- Check the coolant level. Maintain the coolant to the proper level on the sight gauge (if equipped). If a sight gauge is not equipped, maintain the coolant within 13 mm (.5 inch) below the bottom of the filler pipe.
- Clean the cooling system filler cap. Inspect the gaskets of the cooling system filler cap. If the gaskets of the cooling system filler cap are damaged, discard the old cooling system filler cap and install a new cooling system filler cap. If the gaskets of the cooling system filler cap are not damaged, use a 9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump in order to pressure test the cooling system filler cap. The correct pressure is stamped on the face of the cooling system filler cap. If the cooling system filler cap does not maintain the correct pressure, install a new cooling system filler cap.
- Start the engine. Inspect the cooling system for leaks and for proper operating temperature.
