Component Code: 7490

SUBJECT: Caterpillar Monitoring System Fault Code 0248-02

PROBLEM:

There may be a communication problem during the initialization and start up of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET). As CAT ET is locating and communicating with the various ECM?s on the machine, the Data Link communication line can be overwhelmed with communications. During this time, one or more messages from the EMS can be missed. Once the messages are missed, the system thinks that there is a problem with the communication link and a hard code is logged (MID-30, CID-0248, FMI-02).

SOLUTION:

  1. Locate the center main console and remove the ten torques screws that hold the instrument panel in place.
  2. Lift the instrument panel in order to expose the back of the panel.
  3. Locate the EMS Identifier Plug. Remove one of the wires from the plug assembly.
  4. Turn the key switch to the ON position. Let the system cycle for 15 seconds. Turn the key switch to the OFF position.
  5. Reinstall the wire that was removed from the EMS Identifier Plug Assembly (Step 3). Turn the key switch to the ON position. The Fault Code 0248-02 should become a logged fault.
  6. Clear the fault and proceed with the installation of CAT ET. If the fault remains a hard fault, repeat the above procedure.
