PROBLEM
The existing 1490811/">149-0811 Piston Wear Bands can elongate on certain 797 Off-Highway Trucks. If the existing piston wear bands fail, the rod can move out of position causing the seals to fail. In some cases, the HVOF coating can also detach as well, which will also fail the seals. When the existing piston wear bands fail and the rod moves out of position, the existing lower 347-1758 Wear Bands can also damage the HVOF coating and possibly shorten seal life. |

ACTION REQUIRED
Refer to and follow Disassembly and Assembly manuals to remove and disassemble the front strut: 797F - KENR8382, Disassembly and Assembly 797B - RENR2588, Disassembly and Assembly 797 - RENR2037, Disassembly and Assembly Note A: The 459-7518 Backup Ring is required only for glands with a U-cup seal groove of 23.84 +/- 0.1. Refer to Image1. Note B: Inspect the piston and determine if it is 514-3993 Steel Piston with chrome plating, refer to Image2, or a 148-9789 Steel Piston only with no chrome plating. Chrome plate any 148-9789 Steel Piston to achieve the final outer diameter and surface finish. Refer to Image2. Reassemble per the Disassembly and Assembly procedures with new 454-6599 Wear Ring and install the strut. |

Note: 81.0 hours is allowed to remove and install the front strut. Note: 22.0 hours is allowed to disassemble and assemble the front strut. Note: An additional 11.0 hours is allowed if a 148-9789 Steel Piston needs to be chrome plated to become 514-3993. Note: Part age/hours only applies if there was a previous repair in which the customer participated. |
