This Program must be administered either before or after failure.
In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS45274" as the Part Number
and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description code.
If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

The existing 438-7435 (PL83/87) and 449-4859 (PL72) Counterweight Retention Rod Nut(s) on certain PL72, PL83, and PL87 Pipelayers may have been misaligned when they were welded to the counterweight frame assembly. If the existing counterweight retention rod nut is misaligned, it will not be possible to thread the retention rod through the counterweights and into the retention rod nut(s).

This is a 4 hour job per Plate As. that requires re-welding. Some machines will require both Plate As. to be re-welded for a total of 8 hours.
$400 is allowed for the 2-4.5 UNC tap that may be required to chase threads in the 438-7435 or 449-4859 Plate As. One tap per dealership is allowed, please share the tap as needed within your organization.

Rework Procedure

1. One or both of the 438-7435 (PL83/87) and 449-4859 (PL72) Plate As. may not be oriented correctly on the counterweight rack.

2. Use a square to check the orientation of the plates. If the plate(s) are not oriented correctly, you may not be able to slide the counterweight retention rod through the counterweights and then thread the rod into the 438-7435 (PL83/87) and 449-4859 (PL72) Plate As.

3. Cut off the 438-7435 (PL83/87) and 449-4859 (PL72) Plate As. as needed and reposition so that it is aligned with the counterweights. Weld back in place. Use a 12 mm fillet weld as shown in Image 1.3.1 below to reattach the Plate As. Refer to Images 1.3.2 through 1.3.4 for dimensions to locate the Plate As. Dimensions are from the 03 datum line on each drawing.

4. It may be necessary to tap the threaded hole on the inside of the 438-7435 (PL83/87) and 449-4859 (PL72) Plate As. A 2-4.5 UNC tap is needed to accomplish this.
