PROBLEM
The existing wheel bearings can fail on certain 12K, 120K, and 140K Motor Graders. If the existing wheel bearings fail, they can generate debris and cause seal leakage. In some cases, resultant damage may occur. |

ACTION REQUIRED
A new wheel bearing preload procedure, with improved preload setting, and improved assembly process, is now available. Refer to updated KENR8438, Disassembly and Assembly of 120K and Series 2 Motor Graders, for new wheel bearing preload procedure. Refer to updated KENR8443, Disassembly and Assembly of 12K, 140K, 160K and Series 2 Motor Graders, for new wheel bearing preload procedure. If one of the four wheel pods failed or showed severe damage to components, inspect all four wheel pods for any resultant damage. Refer to reuse & salvage guidelines before replacing parts not listed above. Flush and clean the tandem housing to remove any residual contaminants. Note: It is usual for material to build-up in the bottom of the tandem housing. The presence of material in the bottom of the housing alone does not indicate a failure has occurred. Refer to the Service Manual if/as necessary. For any repairs that have resultant damage that requires a part that is not listed in the Parts Needed section it is necessary to work with your Dealer Technical Communicator (TC) to submit a CPI Feedback. The following information needs to be submitted to Caterpillar. .... Date of Rework performed .... Machine Serial Number .... Machine Hours .... Removed Resultant Damaged Part Number(s) .... Dealer Code & Work Order Number .... List of all failed parts for SIB Give the information to your Dealer Technical Communicator (TC) along with this Service Letter program number and CPI number 375311. Request the Dealer TC to submit the information through CPI Feedback within the Service Information Management System (SIMSi). |

PARTS DISPOSITION
Hold all failed and resultant damage parts that are not salvageable for 45 days for a possible Parts Return Request (PRR). See the instructions in the Action Required section. Make sure to list the Service Letter program number on the packing slip and include the closed work order paperwork. Handle all other parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. If a Parts Return Request (PRR) is not issued to you after 45 days through the Send-It-Back process, handle the parts in accordance with your warranty bulletin on warranty parts handling. |
