PROBLEM
Connecting rods or cylinder packs may be contaminated with debris or corrosion. If the existing connecting rod or cylinder pack is contaminated it can result in piston pin bushing or connecting rod bearing damage. |
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect and possibly rework the following connecting rods and cylinder packs in dealer parts stock. Refer to the attached Rework Procedure. 10R4029 CYLINDER PACK AS 10R9224 CYLINDER PACK AS 10R9258 CYLINDER PACK AS 10R9267 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R0582 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R0583 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R2805 ROD GP-CONN 20R2806 ROD GP-CONN 20R2807 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R2808 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R2809 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R2810 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R5616 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R5629 CYLINDER PACK AS 20R6412 CYLINDER PACK AS 3816555 ROD AS 4340488 ROD GP-CONN 4340489 ROD GP-CONN |
SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
For a Rod As, one half hour is allowed for inspection and cleaning. For a Cylinder Pack, one hour is allowed for inspection, disassembly, and cleaning. Submit one claim for all parts inspected or reworked in dealer parts stock. |
PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. |
Inspect and possibly rework the the drilled oil passage for the piston pin (Image 1.1.1) for the following connecting rods and cylinder packs listed below (Image 1.1.2). |

All parts should be inspected via borescope. If bearing caps are removed, attention must be paid to ensure that fracture faces are not damaged or mismatched. The oil passage bore should be clean and free of corrosion or debris larger than 100um. For bores considered to be of acceptable cleanliness and unacceptable cleanliness refer to Image 1.2.1 and Image 1.2.2. If the cleanliness is acceptable, a rust preventative coating of clean 15W-40 engine oil should be applied to the oil bore passage and the connecting rod or the cylinder pack should be repackaged in the original packaging or used. |

If the cleanliness of the bore is unacceptable, a nylon bristled brush is recommended to remove any contamination. The Cylinder block cleaning and tube brushes are available through the Cat? Hand Tools and Shop Supplies catalog. The 6V-3182 Brush or the 6V-7067 Brush is recommended. |
Image1.3.1 |
Before brushing, the brush length should be measured, and special care should be given to restrict the brush?s motion to prevent damage to the pin end bushing. In addition to limiting brush length, a clean lint-free towel can be rolled up and placed through the pin bushing to prevent damage. A clean petroleum-based solvent may be used to help with the cleaning of this passage. Chemicals and neutralizing agents are not recommended, as the risk of further contamination or material degradation cannot be avoided. After brushing, the rod oil passage should be flushed with the clean, filtered petroleum-based solvent. This should be followed with a rust preventative coating to the oil passage and connecting rod to prevent flash rust before use, clean 15W-40 engine oil can be used. For storage, VCI plastic bags should be used to improve the rust prevention of the rod or oil passage. |

Contact the Parts Technical Support Group within the Global Dealer Solution Network (DSN) if problems are found during the inspection, or if cleaning process is unable to achieve required results. A photo should be provided of the part label, refer to Image 1.5.1. Documentation of the date code is also suggested to help with identifying the problem. |

Refer to Images 1.6.1 and 1.6.2 for examples of conforming packaging methods for the connecting rod and cylinder pack. The cylinder pack is wrapped in plastic, placed into a corrugated cardboard box with wooden blocking to secure the pack against motion during transit. If your parts are received in different packaging which has not provided protection against contamination or damage, record the information on the tag, including date code, and contact the Parts Technical Support Group within the Global Dealer Solution Network (DSN). |
