In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 18% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer. |
ACTION REQUIRED
Update the software on the machine. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 2013B and VIMSpc 2011A or newer should be used to perform these software updates. Note: create a full Product Status Report (PSR) and ECM replacement files for the machine before performing the updates as some configurations and settings could be erased during the software installation process. This will allow a point of reference to restore the settings of the machine after the update. See attached Rework Procedure. |

PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. |
Before going to the machine: 1. Ensure you have all the applicable parts and tools needed as called out in the Parts Needed for the Affected Product group before going to the machine. This will include downloading software from SIS Web including Product Link and VIMS software as needed. This will also include the latest version of Cat ET, VIMSpc, a Communications Adapter, and a VIMS PC Cable. 2. Launch SIS Web and ensure that the flash file called out in the Parts Needed is the latest flash file part number. A newer flash file part number may be available. Note: When the machine serial number is entered to retrieve the latest software from SIS WEB, it is possible that the displayed flash file for Product Link or VIMS may be out of date. A list of the latest Product Link flash files can be found in SIS Web under the "Service Software Files" -> "Flash Files" -> "PL Service Technician's Toolbox" web page. See Image 1.1.1. Similarly, a list of the latest VIMS software can be found in SIS Web under the "Service Software Files" -> "Flash Files" -> "VIMS Software & Current Releases" -> "VIMS 3G Production Software Compatibility Matrix". See Images 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 |

In order to download the latest Product Link or VIMS software from SIS Web, enter the individual software part number in SIS Web instead of the machine serial number. 3. Ensure that the Communications Adapter has the latest firmware updates and PC drivers, and that ET is updated to the latest available version. Communications Adapter and ET news, drivers and firmware are available at "https://dealer.cat.com" Update Procedure: Note: To avoid issues, follow these steps exactly. Please read through all the steps first prior to performing any of these tasks. When updating software, let Cat ET finish updating the software prior to performing any other task on the PC. This will help avoid the potential of interrupting the process and causing issues on the ECM. 1. Before updating the software run a Product Status Report (PSR) and save the report for reference. Use the PSR to document the following three items within the VIMS Main Module section: Software Group Part Number, Application Software Part Number, and Wireless Transmission Device Serial Number. These pieces of information will be used in future steps. NOTE: Image 1.2.1 is only an example. The Software Part Numbers and device serial number shown may be different than what is on your machine. |

2. Before updating the software, save ECM replacement files for each ECM to be updated (in Cat ET: Use Service -> Copy Configuration -> ECM Replacement, click yes to load from ECM, select ECM then save to file. To do the next ECM click Load from ECM then Save to file). Note: Failure to create ECM replacement files could result in a loss of configuration information which could require DSN assistance and create unnecessary machine downtime. 3. Update the software on the machine as called out in the Parts Needed for the Affected Product group. Refer to TMI for the appropriate Engine software for each machine. 4. Refer to Image 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 below to find the flash file to load into the Product Link or VIMS ECM. Look at the "VIMS Main Module" parameters in the PSR and look at the last two letters in the "ECM Serial Number". These characters are unique to the type of Product Link device on the machine. |

Note: If the machine is equipped with a PL321SR or PL321VSR, the radio (PL121) must also be updated. To update the radio, make sure the Product Link ECM is selected, and access ?Subsystem Module Programming? under the Service menu as shown in Image 1.4.1. Select the correct flash file by checking the range of the DQ serial number. Please reference RENR7911 for more detailed instructions. |

5. Reload the updated ECMs with their respective ECM replacement files to ensure that no configurations or calibrations are lost. 6. If the machine is equipped with a PL522 or 523 device, submit a case through the Product Link support portal to to schedule a timeslot to have the radio flashed over the air after updating the Product Link software. The machine will need to be on during the update to ensure a successfull flash over the air. |
