Dynamometer Test Preparation {1000}

Usage:

Caterpillar Machines Powered by 3408E (99C) and 3412E (80M)

Wiring Specifications

Special wiring preparations are required for dynamometer testing a 3408E or 3412E Machine Engine out of the chassis. Certain connections must be provided for the engine to run properly: power to the ECM and the engine; a throttle position sensor connection; and a fabricated cable to communicate with the ECM using the ET service tool. Specific machine applications may require additional connections.

Power Connection

The ECM and engine should be connected to a battery that provides 24 volts DC.

Throttle Position Sensor Connection

Pins 8, 9, and 10 of the J3/P3 40-pin machine interface connector must be connected to the 3E-7700 Throttle Position Sensor.

Service Tool Connection

A cable must be fabricated to connect J3/P3 to the 139-4166 Uni-cable for the ET service tool. Pins 1, 2, 6, 7, 26, 31, and 32 connect to an 8T-8736 9-pin connector as follows:

Be sure to use unshielded, twisted pair wire for this cable.

Specific machine engine applications will require different components and different connections to complete the wiring. Some applications may require Pins 14 and 15 to be connected to a right turbo inlet pressure sensor or a connection to Pins 27 and 28 to provide a ground level shutdown switch input. Refer to SENR1026 Schematic - 3408E and 3412E Engines for Caterpillar Built Machines - for the pin numbers and wiring connections for the engine.

Electronic Technician Dynamometer Mode

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool can be used to perform a dynamometer test on a 3408E and 3412E Machine Engine. Running the test with Cat ET can reduce the need for extra sensors and wiring harnesses. The engine software may need to be updated to enable this feature. Refer to Power Connection video and handouts for April 1999 (LEVN4628) for additional information.
