New Door Gas Spring Has Improved Service Life {7308}

Description of Change: A new 172-7008 Gas Spring for the cab door is available. The new gas spring offers improved service life compared to the former 123-3068 Gas Spring.

Adaptable To: The new gas spring is effective with the machine numbers listed in Chart 1.

The new gas spring can be installed on machines in service. The parts needed are listed in Chart 2.

Procedure

1. Fabricate the plate using the dimensions given in Illustration 1 and Chart 3. Use 5 mm (.20 in) mild steel plate.

2. Remove the existing 123-3068 Gas Spring and 123-5632 Bracket. Discard these two parts but keep all of the mounting hardware.

3. Establish the correct position on the door for the plate using the dimension given in Illustration 2.

4. Remove paint and tack weld the plate in position. Correct orientation of the plate is shown in Illustration 3.

NOTE: If the plate contacts one of the welds (1), DO NOT GRIND THE WELD. Grind the plate until it can be installed without contacting the weld.

5. Mount the new 172-7008 Gas Spring using 169-3665 Strap (Bracket) and the existing hardware as shown in Illustration 4. When you are satisfied that the installation is correct, remove the bolt from the plate and fully weld the plate in position. Provide a 3 mm (.25 in) fillet weld all around. Use electrodes to AWS E7018 or equivalent specification.

6. Allow the weld to cool, clean the repair area and paint.

7. Fix the gas spring in position on the door.
