Machining Locator Lug Removed To Reduce The Chance Of Torn Belts As A Result Of Untracking {4197,4198}

Usage:

Challenger 65C (2ZJ1-1964),
Challenger 65D (2ZJ1965-Up),
Challenger 70C (2YL),
Challenger 75C (4KK),
Challenger 85C (9TK) Agricultural Tractors

Description of Change:

Service Magazine; March 18, 1996; Page 2; "Belt Tensioner Nitrogen Precharge Pressure Increased".

A machining locator lug (A) at the rear, bottom of the final drive housing (see illustration) has been removed. In some operating practices the Mobile-trak System can be forced out of its normal position to the inside of the drivers. With the locator lug in place, severe damage to the belt could result.

Adaptable To: Lug removal is effective with Challenger 65D (2ZJ2089-Up), Challenger 75C (4KK2377-2378, 2380-2382, 2384-Up), and Challenger 85C (9TK1945-1946, 1948-1954, 1956-Up) Agricultural Tractors. Lug removal is adaptable to Challenger 65C (2ZJ1-1964), Challenger 65D (2ZJ1965-2088), Challenger 70C (2YL), Challenger 75C (4KK1-2376, 2379, 2383), Challenger 85C (9TK1-1944, 1947, 1955) Agricultural Tractors.

(A) Machining locator lug.

Use an air carbon arc torch to minimize the heat input to the housing. Trim off the locator lug (A) as close as practical to the contour of the housing. Then, grind the area smooth with a grinder.

In addition to machining locator lug removal, other steps can be taken to minimize the possibility of belt untracking:

* Add cleaner bar group to prevent packing of dirt/debris between drivers, or between the belt and drivers or idlers. See the Reference Article.
* Increase the nitrogen pressure in the tension cylinders to 1860 kPa (270 psi). See the Reference Article.

For more information about operation of Challenger Agricultural Tractors in construction or scraper applications, where heavy debris or mud buildup exists, refer to Special Instruction; SEHS9874; "Challenger Tractors In Scraper Applications."
