New Assembly Procedure For Hydraulic Pump Groups With Double Shaft Seals And A Weep Hole Between The Seals Helps Prevent Contamination Through The Weep Hole{5073}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Earthmoving Machines That Use Hydraulic Implement Pumps With Double Shaft Seals And A Weep Hole Between The Seals Except Water Glycol Equipped Hydraulic Systems

A new 4T-9380 Insert and a new 6E-2943 Plug used in the weep hole (2) prevents dirt and debris from entering the pump while allowing the pump to continue to drain through the weep hole. The outermost shaft seal (1) has been turned around so the spring-loaded seal lip faces out away from the pump. With the outer shaft seal in the former position, oil from the drive end of the pump was forced beneath the lip of the seal. This oil could build up pressure and cause the former weep hole plug to discharge. Without the weep hole plug in place, dirt and debris could contaminate the pump causing the seals, shaft and internal components to wear prematurely.

This change is adaptable to pumps already in service. See the Illustration and Procedure.

1. To adapt this change to an earlier machine, thoroughly clean out the 6.35 mm (.250 in) diameter weep hole.

2. Press a 4T-9380 Insert into the weep hole and then press a 6E-2943 Plug into the insert. When installing the insert and plug into the weep hole, the chamfered end must face toward the pump housing.

3. The existing 6V-1899 or 5P-9597 Seal in the outermost position must be installed in the reverse direction. See Illustration.

NOTE: If any Caterpillar double shaft seal implement pumps, except ones used in a water glycol system, experience the problem of oil leaking from the weep hole, the new 4T-9380 Insert and 6E-2943 Plug can be installed in the weep hole. The outer shaft seal can be installed so that the spring-loaded seal lip faces out away from the pump. Do not apply this fix in any system that uses water glycol.
