Disassemble Water Pump

start by:

a) remove water pump

1. Loosen gear nut until it is even with end of shaft. Install tool (A) and pull gear (1) free from shaft.

2. Remove tool (A), nut, gear (1) and key from shaft.

3. Remove the nuts that hold the cover for the pump housing. Install two 3/8"-16NC forcing screws in the cover and remove it from pump housing.

4. Loosen impeller nut until it is even with end of shaft. Install tooling (B) and pull impeller (2) free from shaft.

5. Remove tooling (B), nut, washer, and impeller (2).

6. Remove rubber seal (4) and steel ring (5) from shaft.

7. Remove pump housing (6) from bearing cage (3).

8. Remove seal assembly (7) from the pump housing.

9. Remove snap ring (8) and pull bearings and shaft out of bearing cage.

10. Remove bearings and spacer from pump shaft with a press.

11. Remove oil seal from bearing cage.

Assemble Water Pump

1. Install the bearings and spacer on pump shaft with a press.

2. Install the shaft assembly and snap ring in the bearing cage.

3. Put a thin sheet of plastic (1) or metal around pump shaft. Put oil on lip of seal (2) and slide seal over plastic (1) with spring side of lip toward the bearings. Install seal into bearing cage with tool (A) and a press.

4. Install carbon seal assembly (3) in pump housing with tool (A) and a press.

5. Install the pump housing on bearing cage.

6. Install ring (4) with shiny surface toward carbon seal assembly (3). Install seal (5).

7. Install impeller, washer and nut. Tighten nut to a torque of 55 ± 5 lb. ft. (75 ± 7 N·m). Tighten nut additional amount needed to install cotter pin.

8. Install pump cover (6) without O-ring and gaskets. Make a measurement of clearance between cover and impeller with a thickness gauge (7).

9. Remove cover (6) and install O-ring and gaskets. Use gaskets as needed to increase impeller clearance. Impeller clearance must be .005 to .020 in. (0.13 to 0.51 mm).

10. Put pump drive gear in oil with a temperature of 300°F (149°C). Install key, drive gear, washer, and nut on shaft.

end by:

a) install water pump
