Steering Pump

Usage:

Remove & Install Steering Pump

1. Raise the truck body, and install the body retaining cable.

2. Drain the oil from the steering hydraulic tank.

3. Remove hose (1).

4. Disconnect hose (2) from steering pump (4).

5. Remove tube assemblies (3) and (5) from steering pump (4). Check the condition of the O-ring seals beneath tube assemblies (3) and (5). If the O-ring seals appear worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

6. Attach a hoist to steering pump (4). Remove the four mounting bolts that hold the pump to the auxiliary drive. Remove the steering pump. The weight of the steering pump is 75 kg (165 lb).

7. Check the condition of the O-ring seal located between steering pump (4) and the auxiliary drive. If the O-ring seal appears worn or damaged, use a new part for replacement.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the steering pump.

8. Put the O-ring seal in position on steering pump (4). Install the four mounting bolts.

9. Make sure the O-ring seals are in position in tube assemblies (3) and (5). Connect the tube assemblies to the steering pump.

10. Connect hoses (1) and (2).

11. Fill the steering hydraulic tank with oil to the correct level. See the Operation & Maintenance Manual.

12. Remove the body retaining cable, and lower the truck body.

Disassemble Steering Pump

Start By:

a. remove steering pump

1. Fasten the steering pump to a holding fixture.

2. Remove six screws (4) and valve block (3) from the pump.

3. Remove seat (5), spring (6) and poppet (7) from the valve block.

4. Remove four screws (1) and compensator (2) from valve block (3). Remove the plug and the O-ring seal from the valve block. Remove three O-ring seals between the compensator and the pump.

5. Disassemble compensator (2) as follows:

a. Remove plug (16) and spool (15) from body (14). Remove the O-ring seal from plug (16).

b. Mark the settings of the screw, locknut (8) and plug (9). Remove plug (9). Remove O-ring seal (10) from plug (9).

c. Remove locknut (8) and the screw from plug (9).

d. Remove retainer (11), spring (12) and retainer (13) from body (14).

e. Remove plug (16a) and spool (15a) from body (14). Remove the O-ring seal from plug (16a).

f. Mark the settings of the screw, locknut (8a) and plug (9a). Remove plug (9a). Remove O-ring seal (10a) from plug (9a).

g. Remove locknut (8a) and the screw from plug (9a).

h. Remove retainer (11a), spring (12a) and retainer (13a) from body (14).

6. Remove valve plate (26).

7. Remove O-ring seals (18) and (28) from the rods.

8. Remove gasket (29).

9. Remove control rod (19) and control piston (17). If necessary, remove piston (17) from control rod (19).

10. Remove bias rod (27). If necessary, remove bias piston (31) and spring (30).

11. Remove bearing (23).

12. Remove spacer (24).

13. If necessary, remove pin (20) and the cup from the valve block.

14. Remove rotator assembly (32) from the pump. See Step 19 for the disassembly of the rotator assembly.

15. Remove swashplate (41) from housing (40).

16. Remove snap ring (35) from the front of the pump.

17. Use a soft hammer to remove shaft (34) from the housing. Remove seal (36).

18. Remove the bearing from the shaft. If necessary, remove cup (37) from the housing.

19. Disassemble the rotator assembly as follows:

a. Put identification marks on pistons (38) and cage (39) for correct installation during assembly.

b. Remove nine pistons (38) and cage (39) from the rotator assembly.

c. If necessary, remove four screws (44), two spacers (42) and two limiters (43).

------ WARNING! ------

Ring (22) holds a spring under compression. A spring in compression can cause personal injury if it is released suddenly. To prevent possible personal injury, use caution when removing ring (22).

--------WARNING!------

d. Use a press and tooling (A) to compress spring (21).

e. Remove snap ring (22).

f. Carefully release the tension on spring (21). Remove the spring and guides (25) and (33) from the rotator assembly.

20. Remove plug (51) and O-ring seal (50).

21. Remove two screws (49) and two bearings (48).

22. Remove three screws (45) and cover (46).

23. Remove O-ring seal (47).

Assemble Steering Pump

1. Assemble the rotator assembly as follows;

a. Install guides (25) and (33) and spring (22) to the rotator assembly.

b. Use a press and tooling (A) to compress spring (21).

c. Install snap ring (22).

d. If removed, install four screws (44), two spacers (42) and two limiters (43). Tighten screws (44) to a torque of 34 ± 3 N·m (25 ± 2 lb ft).

e. Identify the proper locations. Install nine pistons (38) and cage (39) to the rotator assembly.

2. Install two screws (49) and two bearings (48). Tighten the screws to a torque of 4 ± .4 N·m (3 ± .3 lb ft).

3. Install plug (51) and O-ring seal (50). Tighten the plug to a torque of 102 ± 4 N·m (75 ± 3 lb ft).

4. Install the bearing onto shaft (34). If removed, install cup (37) in housing (40).

5. Install seal (36). Use a soft hammer to install shaft (34) to the housing.

6. Install snap ring (35) to the front of the pump.

7. Install swashplate (41) and rotator assembly (32) in housing (40).

8. Install O-ring seal (47).

9. Install three screws (45) and cover (46). Tighten the screws to a torque of 8.5 ± 1 N·m (6.5 ± 1 lb ft).

10. Install valve plate (26).

11. If removed, install pin (20) and the cup in the valve block.

12. Install spacer (24).

13. Install bearing (23).

14. If removed, install spring (30). Install bias rod (27) in bias piston (31). Tighten to a torque of 79 ± 4 N·m (60 ± 3 lb ft). Install the assembly.

15. If removed, install control rod (19) in control piston (17). Tighten to a torque of 79 ± 4 N·m (60 ± 3 lb ft). Install the assembly.

16. Install O-ring seals (18) and (28) to the rods.

17. Install gasket (29).

18. Assemble compensator (2) as follows:

a. Install the O-ring seal onto plug (16). Install plug (16) and spool (15) into body (14). Tighten plug (16) to a torque of 31 ± 2 N·m (23 ± 1 lb ft).

b. Install retainer (13), spring (12) and retainer (11) to body (14).

c. Install O-ring seal (10) onto plug (9). Install plug (9). Tighten to a torque of 102 ± 4 N·m (76 ± 3 lb ft).

d. Install locknut (8) and the screw into plug (9). Tighten locknut (8) to a torque of 9 ± 1 N·m (7 ± 1 lb ft) after adjusting the screw.

e. Install the O-ring seal onto plug (16a). Install plug (16a) and spool (15a) into body (14). Tighten plug (16a) to a torque of 31 ± 2 N·m (23 ± 1 lb ft).

f. Install retainer (13a), spring (12a) and retainer (11a) to body (14).

g. Install O-ring seal (10a) onto plug (9a). Install plug (9a). Tighten to a torque of 102 ± 4 N·m (76 ± 3 lb ft).

h. Install locknut (8a) and the screw into plug (9a). Tighten locknut (8a) to a torque of 9 ± 1 N·m (7 ± 1 lb ft) after adjusting the screw.

19. Install seat (5), spring (6) and poppet (7) to the valve block.

20. Install the O-ring seal to the plug. Install the plug to valve block (3). Tighten the plug to a torque of 79 ± 4 N·m (60 ± 3 lb ft). Install three O-ring seals between the compensator and the pump. Install four screws (1) and compensator (2) to valve block (3). Tighten the four screws to a torque of 34 ± 3 N·m (25 ± 2 lb ft).

21. Install six screws (4) and valve block (3) to the pump. Tighten the four small screws to a torque of 115 ± 12 N·m (85 ± 9 lb ft). Tighten the two large screws to a torque of 285 ± 30 N·m (215 ± 20 lb ft).

End By:

a. install steering pump.
