25. Slide shaft (28) from housing far enough to install a strap and hoist. Remove shaft (28) from housing. The weight of the shaft is 24 kg (53 lb.). Remove bearing cone (29) from shaft.

26. Use tooling (G) to remove bearing cone (30) from shaft.

27. Use tooling (H) to remove bearing cup (31) from housing. Remove the lip type seal (32) from the housing.

28. Turn the housing (33) over and remove bearing cup (34) with tooling (J).

Install Final Drives

1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (1) and install it in the housing. Make sure it is against the housing seat.

2. Turn the housing over on the opposite side and use tooling (A) to install the lip type seal with the seal lip out as shown. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (2) and install it against the housing seat. Put clean oil of the type being sealed on the seal lip.

3. Install seal (4) with the lip of the seal toward the flange on the housing. Install washer (3) on housing with the chamfer up as shown.

4. Heat bearing cone (6) to a temperature of 135° C (275° F). Install bearing cone on shaft (5).

5. Put housing on wooden blocks and install shaft assembly. The weight of the shaft assembly is 24 kg (53 lb.). Install a nylon strap and hoist on ring gear (7). The weight of the ring gear is 28 kg (62 lb.). Put the ring gear in position on housing and install plates, locks (8) and bolts that fasten the ring gear to the housing. Bend the locks against the bolts.

6. Put washer (11) in position in carrier (9). Install retaining ring (10) with tool (B).

7. Install two roller assemblies in each gear (15). Install gears (15) and washer on each side of gear in carrier. Install shafts (14), retainers (13) and locks (12) on the carrier. Bend the locks against the bolts.

8. Turn the carrier assembly over on the opposite side and use a hoist to install carrier assembly (16) in the housing. The weight of the carrier assembly is 66 kg (146 lb.).

9. Install gear (17) in carrier assembly.

10. Put housing assembly in position on tooling (C) and install it on the bevel gear case. The weight of the assembly is 277 kg (610 lb.). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 426 ± 20 N·m (314 ± 15 lb.ft.).

Typical Example

11. Install bolt (18) and washer in the pin for the articulation cylinder.

12. Install two rings (19) in the housing. The diagonal cut of one ring must be located at location (X). The diagonal cut of the other ring must be located at location (Y). Put identification on the top of the housing as to the ring location for installation purposes.

13. Install washer (20) with the round edge up as shown.

14. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on seal (4), the inside diameter of rings (19) and on the counterbore surface of housing (21) that makes contact with stud (4). Install tooling (D) on housing (21) and put it in position on housing (22).

15. Install original shims (23) and retainer (25).

16. Install four bolts (24) 90° apart as shown. Tighten bolts to a torque of 271 ± 15 N·m (200 ± 11 lb.ft.). Torque for bolts (24) on the 16G Motor Grader is 475 ± 20 N·m (350 ± 15 lb.ft.).

17. Install tooling (E) as shown between both housings. There must be a washer and nut on each side of housing (21).

18. With nuts (26) of tooling (E) loose, turn nuts behind housing (21) to push it away from housing (22). Install tooling (F) on housing (21) and on retainer.

19. To check end play, loosen both nuts on the back of housing (21) and tighten nuts (26) evenly. The correct end play is from 0.00 to 0.06 mm (0.000 to 0.002 in.). Add or subtract shims to get the correct end play.

20. Install bolts (24) and tighten bolts to a torque of 271 ± 15 N·m (200 ± 11 lb.ft.). Torque for bolts (24) on the 16G Motor Grader is 475 ± 20 N·m (350 ± 15 lb.ft.).

21. Install tooling (G) and a hoist in position on the tandem housing. Make an alignment of the tandem housing and the final drive housing. The weight of the tandem housing assembly is 1497 kg (3300 lb.). Install tool (H) on the end of the shaft. Install tandem housing and tighten the bolts to a torque of 426 ± 20 N·m (314 ± 15 lb.ft.).

22. Remove tool (H) from the end of shaft and tool (G) from the tandem housing.

23. Use tool (J) and the following procedure to get the correct preload on the final drive bearing.

24. Rotate the shaft and hit the hub of the sprocket while tightening nut (25) with tool (J).

25. Tighten nut (25) until a torque of 18.08 ± 1.13 N·m (160 ± 10 lb.in.) above seal drag is required to rotate the shaft.

26. Back nut (25) off one locking position and hit the hub of the sprocket again.

27. Final torque to rotate the shaft should be 8.47 ± 1.13 N·m (74.96 ± 10 lb.in.) above seal drag.

NOTE: One of the notches in the spanner nut must be in alignment with a hole in the sprocket. Tighten the nut if necessary to get the nut and sprocket in alignment.

28. Connect air line (26) to elbow.

29. Lower the machine to the ground.
