NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
NOTE: This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI3078" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code. Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI3078" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

Due to a software problem the backup Electronic Control Module (ECM) will assume control of the engine if the engine is restarted from a remote start/stop switch (i.e. pilot house panel) without first cycling the power to the ECM.

Updated Flash File Software (refer to the "Action Required")
Action Required
Determine the most current software part number containing the update for the engine by reviewing the FIND system text file: "3500B Commercial Engine (Built >4/97)" located in document type "Flash File Cross-Reference" (FLASH) or same file name on the SIS tool guide and setup cd.
Flash the updated software into the primary and backup Electronic Control Module (ECM).
NOTE: Reference the July 1997 Engine News article entitled "Software Serviceability".
