Use New Tools To Adapt Former Cylinder Heads With Counterbores To Cylinder Blocks With Spacer Plates

Usage:

D353 and D342 Industrial and Marine Engines

SUPPLEMENT: 12/13/78

ENGINE NEWS, MAY 24, 1978, PAGE 1.

In the article "Use New Tools To Adapt Former Cylinder Heads With Counterbores To Cylinder Blocks With Spacer Plates", add the following information:

The new cylinder heads have five more holes (for bolts used during installation) than the former cylinder heads. These holes are in alignment with holes in the new cylinder blocks that have spacer plates. This new design improves the seal between the cylinder head, the gasket, and the cylinder block.

The former cylinder heads that have had all of the counterbores for the water directors removed and inserts installed can be used with the new cylinder blocks.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Two different size reamers and inserts are available to adapt former cylinder heads with counterbores to the above models equipped with the new cylinder blocks that use a spacer plate. The new cylinder heads, used with the cylinder blocks that have spacer plates, do not have counterbores in their bottom surface for the water directors like the former cylinder heads. When replacement of the former cylinder block is necessary, a cylinder block that uses a spacer plate will be sent. Use the procedure that follows and the new inserts to adapt the former cylinder heads with counterbores to the new cylinder block.

5.75" Bore, 6 Cylinder Engines

Use a 5P8701 Reamer to cut (ream) all of the counterbores for the water directors. Use cutting oil during the operation. Install a 5P8703 Insert (Plug) into each of the reamed counterbores. Make sure the bevel side of each insert is installed toward the hole and that the flat side of the insert is even with the cylinder head surface.

6.25" Bore, 6 Cylinder Engines

Use a 5P8701 Reamer to cut (ream) all of the counterbores for the larger diameter water directors. Use a 5P8702 Reamer to ream the counterbores for the smaller diameter water directors. Use cutting oil during both ream operations. Install a 5P8703 Insert (Plug) into each of the larger reamed counterbores. Install a 5P8704 Insert into each of the smaller counterbores. Make sure the bevel side of the inserts is installed toward the hole and the flat side of the inserts is flush (even) with the cylinder head surface.
