A new tool group, (see Illustration 1) is available to check the alignment of the piston cooling jets in the above engines. Wrong alignment of the cooling jets can cause cracks in the pistons and expansion of the piston rings. Piston ring expansion can cause scuffing (scratches in the cylinder wall) and/or seizure of the pistons.
Illustration 1. 5P8709 Piston Tool Group.
The new tool group is used on the Caterpillar Fuel Injection Test Bench and the oil supply, for lubrication, is connected to it. The oil is pumped (pushed with a pump) through the cooling jet and at the 5P8597 Target. A wrench is used to bend the cooling jet until the oil passes through the correct hole in the target (see Illustration 2).
Illustration 2. Wrenches included in the tool group can be used to bend the jet until oil passes through the target.
