New Optional Two Piece Service Replacement Piston {1214,1331}

Usage:

3406C (3ER) Industrial Engines;
3406C (1LS, 4JK) Generator Set Engines

Description of Change: A newer optional service replacement two piece piston and associated components (rings, piston pin, pin retainer) is available to replace the former two piece piston service replacement components and the original one piece aluminum piston. A cooling jet and bolt and a new fuel injection nozzle washer are also used with the optional service replacement two piece piston. The new fuel injection nozzle washer is black in color and 1.27 mm (.050 in) thick. The former washer was green in color and 3.18 mm (.125 in). This service replacement option is available ONLY if ALL six aluminum pistons are being replaced at the same time. The original one piece pistons and the two piece pistons must not be mixed in the engine. The optional two piece piston has a steel crown and an aluminum skirt. The former optional service replacement piston crown, piston rings (intermediate and oil), and cylinder pack have been replaced by new part numbers. The former optional service replacement piston assembly and new optional replacement piston assembly components may be intermixed in an engine. Parts from the former optional service replacement and the new optional service replacement piston assembly cannot be mixed within a single cylinder. Parts in each individual cylinder must all be of the former or new two piece piston consist (see chart).

The new service replacement piston and related parts eliminate the separation of iron ring band in the aluminum piston and improve oil control.

Adaptable To: The chart identifies the components required to replace all one piece pistons (aluminum) and the former two piece pistons with a new two piece piston.

Inspect the oil pump bypass spring retainer for the correct part number. The spring retainer should be 9Y-1800 which is 69.6 mm (2.74 in) high. Replace the spring retainer 9Y-1792, which is 60.1 mm (2.37 in) if it is used in the engine.

NOTE: Remove all carbon from the bore and the end of the injector adapter in the cylinder head. The 7W-4487 Washer allows the fuel injection nozzle to be seated deeper into injector adapter. Replace the 9L-9098 Fuel Injector Carbon Dam if required.

NOTE: If remanufactured components are preferred, order six 0R-9847 Cylinder Packs and six 166-3650 Tube Assemblies (3/8 inch) and six 150-1156 Bolts (3/8 inch). The 158-0449 or 168-4539 Tube Assemblies (7/16 inch) and the 151-5925 Bolt (7/16 inch) may be reused.
