Correct handling of the water pumps in the above engines is necessary. Improper handling of the water pumps can cause cracking of the face seal group, resulting in very early hour failures.

NOTICE

Water pumps may leak as a result of damaged face seals. Relative movement between the shaft and the housing may allow the drive shaft to contact the face seal in the water pump. If contact occurs, the face seal will be damaged, and very early hour failures can result.

Water Pump Handling Procedures

Typical view of the water pump. (1) 120-7550 Face Seal Group. (2) Water pump shaft. (3) Water pump housing. (4) Rubber seal. (5) Ceramic ring.

* Do NOT move the water pump shaft (2) in respect to the water pump housing (3).
* The water pump should NEVER be set down with the shaft on the ground.
* Never handle the water pump by the shaft.
* Never use a hammer, mount, or other device on the water pump or on the shaft which might cause movement between the shaft and the housing.

NOTE: The 124-5245 Face Seal Group is a service replacement for the 120-7550 Face Seal Group. The 124-5245 Face Seal Group is affected by all of the above.

Use Of The Installation Tool In Order To Prevent Damage To The Water Pump

Caterpillar recommends using an installation tool when servicing the above water pumps. The installation tool is not serviced but can be manufactured out of channel iron. See Illustration 2 for specifications.

The installation tool prevents the water pump face seals from being damaged during installation. The installation tool improves the rigidity between the pump housing and the shaft. Relative motion that might cause the face seals to fail is eliminated.

1. Seat the installation tool (7) on the water pump housing assembly (6) so the 218.0 mm (8.58 in) length fits within the inside diameter of the pump housing.

2. Fasten the installation tool to the impeller with two 7/16-20 x 3 bolts (9).

3. Install the water pump so the spline (8) is mated with the gear assembly.

4. After the water pump spline is mated to the engine, remove the installation tool from the pump housing. Bolt the pump in place and complete all of the other pump connections.
