Variable Timing Unit

Usage:

Remove Variable Timing Unit

start by:

a) remove fuel injection pump housing and governor

b) remove fuel transfer pump

1. Remove the coupling access cover from the accessory drive housing and remove coupling bolts (1).

2. Remove the variable timing unit from the accessory drive housing.

Install Variable Timing Unit

1. Install the variable timing unit (1) in the housing and coupling.

2. Install the coupling bolts and lock. Do not tighten bolts until engine timing adjustment is made.

end by:

a) install fuel transfer pump

b) install fuel injection pump housing and governor

Disassemble Variable Timing Unit

start by:

a) remove variable timing unit

1. Push down on retainer (1) and remove pin (2).

2. Remove retainer (1) and spring (3).

3. Push out pins (4) and remove the weights.

4. Remove piston and rod assembly (5).

5. Remove pins (11), rod (9) and nut (8).

6. Remove spring (10) and valve (7) from piston assembly (6).

Assemble Variable Timing Unit

1. Install valve (3), spring (4) and nut (2) on piston assembly (1).

2. Tighten nut (2) until the distance (X) between inner surface of nut (2) and piston (1) is 1.730 in. (43.9 mm). Make a .095 ± .002 in. (2.41 ± 0.05 mm) diameter hole through the nut and threaded part of piston assembly. Install the pin.

3. Install rod (6) and tighten it against nut (2). Put a location mark on rod (6) .156 in. (3.96 mm) from outer surface of nut (2). Make a .095 ± .002 in. (2.41 ± 0.05 mm) diameter hole (5) through the rod and threaded part of piston assembly. Install the pin.

4. Install piston and rod assembly (7) into the shaft assembly.

5. Install spring (8), retainer (9) and pin (10) in shaft assembly.

6. Install weights and pins. Put a center punch mark at edge of each hole in shaft assembly to hold pins in shaft (stake pins in place).

NOTE: Each weight must move freely on its pin.
