Connecting Rod Bearings

Usage:

Remove And Install Connecting Rod Bearings

start by:

a) remove oil filter base

1. Remove coolant from engine cooling system.

2. Remove bolts from elbow (1) and elbow (2).

3. Remove bolts (3) from oil cooler and loosen hose clamp (4).

4. Fasten a hoist to the oil cooler and remove it from the engine.

5. Remove fuel lines (6) and inspection cover (5).

6. Turn crankshaft and put connecting rod into position with tool (A).

7. Remove the nuts for connecting rod cap with tooling (B).

8. Remove cap (9) and lower half of bearing (8).

9. Remove bolts (7) from the connecting rod and turn crankshaft away from connecting rod.

10. Remove upper half of bearing from connecting rod.

11. Do Steps 7 through 10 for the other connecting rod that is in position.

12. Install the upper and lower halves of bearings in connecting rods and caps.

13. Put clean oil on upper halves of bearings and crankshaft journals. Turn crankshaft into place in connecting rods with tool (A). Install the bolts in connecting rods.

14. Measure the clearance between bearing and crankshaft with wire (C) as shown. Put the caps in position and install nuts.


NOTICE

Notch (10) in cap must be installed on same side as notch in connecting rod. Make sure heads of bolts are in correct position in rod.


15. Tighten nuts (11) to 50 ± 5 lb.ft. (6.9 ± 0.7 mkg). Put a mark across bolt and nut. Tighten nuts 180° from marks on bolts with tooling (B).

16. Remove the caps and measure thickness of wire. Bearing clearance with new parts will be .0029 to .0060 in. (0.094 to 0.152 mm). Maximum permissible clearance is .010 in. (0.25 mm).

17. Put clean oil on lower halves of bearings. Put caps in position on rods and install nuts. Tighten nuts to 50 ± 5 lb.ft. (6.9 ± 0.7 mkg). Put a mark across bolt and nut. Tighten nuts 180° from marks on bolts with tooling (B).

18. Do Steps 6 through 17 for remainder of bearings.

19. Install inspection cover and fuel lines (12).

20. Put oil cooler in place on engine and install bolts.

21. Tighten hose clamp and install bolts for elbow (13).

22. Fill engine with coolant to correct level.
