ENGINE NEWS, MARCH 1985, PAGE 3.

Put a mark through the article "Do Not Weld On Painted Surfaces". Make a reference to the article titled "New Type Of Paint Used On Some Caterpillar Products; Do Not Weld On Painted Surfaces" in this issue.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Some Caterpillar products that formerly used alkyd paint are now covered with polyurethane paint. Toxic fumes are released when either of these paints are burned. The toxic products that each paint releases are different. Breathing the toxic fumes from either paint can be a health hazard.

Welding on painted surfaces can cause the paint to burn and release toxic fumes. Special care should be taken to remove paint from areas to be welded. If it is not possible to avoid welding on painted surfaces, adequate ventilation must be provided to remove the toxic fumes from the work area.
