Prelubrication Pump Problem

Usage:

3512E BZ3
Use this procedure to troubleshoot low prelubrication oil pressure. Also, use this procedure if the following event code is active or logged.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  CDL Code and Description  Comments
3029-31
Engine start inhibited, pre-lube system issue
E489 (1)
Intake Valve Actuation Pressure System Failure
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) did not detect the minimum pressure for the programmed duration that is for the engine prelube sequence.
The code is logged.
3551-1
Engine Oil Priming State : Low - most severe (3)
E233 (3)
Low Engine Pre-Lube Pressure
The engine is not allowed to start.
The code is logged.
3551-17
Engine Oil Priming State : Low - least severe (1)
E233 (1)
Low Engine Pre-Lube Pressure
The engine is not allowed to start.
The code is logged.
3551-18
Engine Oil Priming State : Low - moderate severity (2)
E233 (2)
Low Engine Pre-Lube Pressure
The engine is not allowed to start.
The code is logged.

Probable Causes

  • Codes

  • Oil level

  • Power

  • Prelubrication pump

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check the Engine Oil Level

Oil Level

Result: The engine oil is not low.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The engine oil level is low.

Repair: Perform the following procedure:

1. Add engine oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.

2. Start the engine.

3. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the Electrical Power to the Prelube Pump Motor

A. Connect Cat ET.

B. Use Cat ET to perform the following override:

- Prelubrication Relay Override

C. Measure the voltage at the prelubrication pump wiring harness connector. Refer to the appropriate wiring schematic.

Power

Result: There is system voltage at the prelubrication pump wiring harness connector.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The prelubrication pump voltage is NOT equal to system voltage.

There is a problem with the power supply to the prelubrication pump. Check the power supply, circuit protection device, and the relay.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Check for Inadequate Prelubrication Pump Pressure

A. Connect Cat ET.

B. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameter during the prelube cycle:

- "Engine Oil Pressure"

Note: The ECM must detect an oil pressure of 20 kPa (3 psi) for the programmed "Engine Ready to Start Prelube Duration" before the engine is cranked.

Pressure

Result: The pressure is NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged prelubrication pump.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
