G3500H Generator Set Engine Caterpillar

Fuel Differential Pressure Is High

Usage:

G3512H GF4
Use this procedure to troubleshoot the following event code.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  Comments
1391-15
Engine Fuel Valve Differential Pressure : High - least severe (1)
The difference in fuel pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the fuel metering valve is greater than the trip point. The delay time has expired.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.
1391-0
Engine Fuel Valve Differential Pressure : High - most severe (3)
The difference in fuel pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the fuel metering valve is greater than the trip point. The delay time has expired.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.

Note: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System" for information on trip points and delay times.

Probable Causes

  • Excessive fuel supply pressure

  • Leaks in the piping after the fuel metering valve

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A 1391-15 code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: No active codes

STOP

2. Check the Gas Supply Pressure

A. Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to observe the absolute fuel pressure and the fuel differential pressure. The fuel metering valve requires a gas supply that is regulated to a pressure between 10 to 35 kPa (1.5 to 5 psi).

Pressure

Result: The pressure is outside of the acceptable range.

Repair: Adjust the gas pressure regulator to achieve the correct pressure.

If the gas pressure regulator cannot be adjusted to the correct setting, repair the regulator or replace the regulator.

Result: The pressure is inside the acceptable range.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the Fuel System for Leaks

Note: Always use a gas detector to determine the presence of gaseous fuel.

A. Use a gas detector to check for leaks in the piping between the outlet of the fuel metering valve and the turbocharger compressor.

Gas Leak

Result: A leak was found.

Repair: Remedy the cause of the gas leak.
