C175 Tier 4 Final Engines for Off-Highway Trucks Caterpillar

Exhaust Differential Temperature Is High

Usage:

793F D3T
Use this procedure to troubleshoot a high exhaust temperature differential. Also, use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active or logged.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  CDL Code and Description  Comments
1318-0
Engine Exhaust Temperature Bank Imbalance : High - most severe (3)
E2163 (3)
High Turbocharger Turbine Intake Differential Temperature
There is a temperature differential greater than a threshold between the left and right cylinder banks.
1318-15
Engine Exhaust Temperature Bank Imbalance : High - least severe (1)
E2163 (1)
High Turbocharger Turbine Intake Differential Temperature
There is a temperature differential greater than a threshold between the left and right cylinder banks.
1318-16
Engine Exhaust Temperature Bank Imbalance : High - moderate severity (2)
E2163 (2)
High Turbocharger Turbine Intake Differential Temperature
There is a temperature differential greater than a threshold between the left and right cylinder banks.

If the engine is shutdown due to an exhaust temperature differential is high event, the power to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) must be cycled to restart the engine.

Probable Causes

  • Codes

  • Exhaust system

  • Fuel injectors

  • Turbocharger

  • Valve train components

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Inspect the Exhaust System

A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.

B. Inspect the following exhaust components:

- Lines
- Hoses
- Bellows
- Clamps
- Exhaust manifolds

Note: Verify that all the bellows have the correct orientation. Ensure that the arrow on the bellows is pointing in the direction of the exhaust flow.

Exhaust System

Result: The exhaust system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The exhaust system is NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged exhaust components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Test the Fuel Injector

A. Connect Cat ET.

B. Use Cat ET to perform the following fuel injector test:

- "Injector Solenoid Test"
- "Cylinder Cut-Out Test"

Injector
Result: The tests were successful.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The tests were not successful.

Repair: Diagnose the problem. Repair or replace damaged components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Inspect the Turbochargers for Damage

A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.

B. Inspect the following turbocharger components for damage:

- Compressor wheel
- Compressor housing
- Turbine wheel
- Turbine housing
- Temperature sensor

Turbocharger

Result: The turbochargers are OK.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: A damaged turbocharger or temperature sensor was detected.

Repair: Replace the failed component.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.

5. Inspect the Valve Train Components

A. Remove the valve mechanism cover and the camshaft covers.

B. Check the following valve train components for damage:

- Camshafts
- Valve rotocoils
- Valve springs
- Camshaft followers
- Rocker shafts
- Bridges
- Injectors

D. Check for valves that do not move freely. Remove the cylinder head and inspect the valves. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly manual for additional information.

Valve Train

Result: The valve train components are damaged.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged valve train components.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
