A New Fuel Priming Pump Is Used On Certain C175-16 Locomotive Engines {1258} Caterpillar

Locomotive Engine

C175-16 (S/N: 3A91-UP; Y3A1-UP; KWT1-UP; R1X1-UP)

Description Of Change: The new fuel priming pump used helps build fuel supply pressure during the pre-lubrication/fuel priming stage of engine start-up.

Adaptable To: Table 1 contains the part numbers needed for this change. Table 2 contains the effective serial numbers for this change.

Refer to the installation instructions below for removal and installation of the fuel priming pump.

1. Remove both tube assemblies (1) from the manifold. Cover the adapter on tube assembly (2)

2. Remove bracket (3) from the fuel pump. Remove hose assemblies (4) and (5) from the fuel pump manifold and fuel priming pump.

3. Remove tube assembly (6) from the fuel manifold.

4. Remove fuel tube (7) from the fuel manifold. Disconnect tube assembly (8) from the fuel manifold.

5. Remove fuel manifold (9) from the fuel pump. Cover the open ports of the fuel manifold and fuel pump to prevent contamination.

6. Remove fuel priming pump group (10) from the engine.

   Note: The fuel filters have been removed for viewing purposes.

7. Remove tube assembly (20) from the fuel filter base and fuel pump.

   1. Remove clips (11), clips (12), hard washers (13), grommets (14), and bolts (15) from around the tube assembly.

   2. Remove connector (16), elbow (17), tee (18), and regulator (19) from the fuel filter base and fuel pump.

1. Install check valve (1) with o-ring seal (2) and o-ring seal (3) into the left port of the fuel pump. Torque the check valve to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

2. Install cross adapter (4) with o-ring seals (3) onto the previously installed check valve. Torque the cross adapter to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

3. Install connector (5) with o-ring seal (3) and o-ring seal (6). Torque the connector to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

4. Install cross (7) with o-ring seals (3), (8), and (9). Torque the cross to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

5. Install the elbow, regulator, adapter, and sensor group with new o-rings into the fuel filter base.

   1. Install elbow assembly (10) with o-ring seal (3) and o-ring seal (20).

   2. Install pressure regulator (12) with o-ring seal (2) and o-ring seal (21).

   3. Install tee (13) with o-ring seal (2) and o-ring seal (21).

   4. Install pressure sensor group (22) with adapter (24), o-ring seal (23), and o-ring seal (25).

6. Install hose assembly (11) and leave hand tight.

7. Install grommets (17), clips (16), clips (18), spacers (19), hard washers (15), and bolts (14) in the locations shown in Illustration 11. Torque hose assembly (11) to 140 N·m (103 lb ft). Torque the bolts to standard torque for the fastener size.

   Note: Parts in this step are reused from a previous removal step.

8. Install bracket assembly (26) using two bolts (27) with two hard washers (28). Torque the bolts to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).

10. Install two connectors (33) with o-ring seals (2) and o-ring seals (3) into the side of the fuel manifold and fuel pump.

11. Install plug (34) with o-ring seal (20) into the side of the fuel manifold.

12. Install hose and tube assembly (36) with o-ring seals (21) and leave the ends hand tight.

    1. Install grommet (40), clip (39), clip (41), hard washer (38), and bolt (37) onto the hose and tube assembly. Tighten the hose and tube assembly and then the bolts for the clips.

13. Install hose assembly (35) from the fuel manifold to the fuel pump.

15. Install plug assembly (43) into the bottom of the fuel manifold and torque to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

16. Install plug (43) with o-ring seal (23) into the bottom of the fuel manifold and torque to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

17. Install two connector plug assemblies (48) in the fuel manifold and torque to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

18. Install check valve group (46) in the fuel manifold and torque to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

19. Install connector (45) with o-ring seal (2) and o-ring seal (21) in the fuel manifold and torque to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

20. Install plug assembly (47) in the fuel manifold and torque to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

21. Install two hose assemblies (49) onto the fuel manifold and torque the hose assemblies to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).

22. Install fuel priming pump group (50) onto the engine.

    1. Install two mounts (53), spacer (54), hard washer (52), hard washer (54), and bolt (51) into the top hole of the fuel priming pump group. Torque the bolt to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

    2. Install four isolation mounts (57), two spacers (58), two hard washers (52), two hard washers (54), and two bolts (56) into the two bottom holes of the fuel priming pump group. Torque the bolts to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

23. Install hose assembly (59) and hose assembly (60) from the fuel transfer pump to the fuel priming pump group. Leave the hose assemblies hand tight at the connections.

    1. Install grommet (40), clip (62), clip (63), hard washer (31), and bolt (61) around hose assembly (59). Tighten the hose assembly connections to 110 N·m (81 lb ft). Torque the bolt to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).

    2. Install grommet (40), clip (62), clip (63), hard washer (31), and bolt (64) around hose assembly (60). Tighten the hose assembly connections to 110 N·m (81 lb ft). Torque the bolt to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).
