C175-20 Locomotive Engine Caterpillar

System Pressure Release

Usage:

C175-20 R4F

Coolant System

------ WARNING! ------

Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.

To relieve the pressure from the coolant system, turn off the engine. Allow the cooling system pressure cap to cool. Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Fuel System

To relieve pressure from a low-pressure fuel system, turn off the engine.

For more information, refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, UENR2993.

High-Pressure Fuel Lines

------ WARNING! ------

Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from improperly checking for a leak.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. Escaping air or fluid under pressure, even a pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue causing serious injury, and possible death.

If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Fuel system service is to be performed by a trained service technician only.

  • The high-pressure fuel lines are constantly charged with high pressure.

  • The high-pressure fuel can be held in the fuel lines for an extended length of time after the engine has stopped.

  • The internal pressures of the high-pressure fuel lines are higher than other types of fuel system.

Before servicing the common rail fuel system, the fuel that is under high pressure must be released. Depending on conditions, the fuel system may hold high rail pressure for an extended time.

To release pressure in the fuel rail, perform the following steps:

    Illustration 1g06021868

  1. The recommended HP fuel system depressurization method is to loosen the end-plug at one of the 2 last HP fuel accumulators by one full turn. Upon loosening either of these end-plugs, HP fuel will be released and safely contained in the double-wall fuel line system, relieving fuel pressure in the process.

  1. Verify the "Fuel Rail Pressure" in Cat ET is between 0 and 2 MPa (290 psi).

  2. After the pressure has been released, the end plug should be tightened to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

Note: Following repairs to the High-Pressure fuel system, remove accumulator plugs at the repair and perform a fuel system functional test. Reinstall the accumulator plugs.

Engine Oil

To relieve pressure from the lubricating system, turn off the engine.
