Follow the recommended procedure for removal and installation of tires and or wheel assemblies. Ensure that the machine and tire and or wheel assembly are properly supported at all times. Improper procedures that are used to remove and install tires and or wheel assemblies can result in personal injury or death. |
Servicing and changing tires and rims can be dangerous. This work must be done only by trained personnel with correct tools and procedures. If correct procedures are not followed while servicing tires and rims, the assemblies can burst with explosive force and cause serious physical injury or death. Follow carefully the specification information provided by your tire servicing person or dealer. |
Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component. Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed. |
Do not attempt to assemble this machine until you read and you understand the assembly instructions. Improper assembly procedures could result in injury or death. |
- Before the tires and the rims are installed, thoroughly clean the wheel studs. Remove any paint, debris, or other contaminants.
- Remove the grease and the metal burs from the wheel and the mounting area. Clean the mating surfaces free of wax, dirt, debris, paint, and grease.

Illustration 4 g06343223 - Use Tooling (A) to raise the front end of the machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Jacking Locations - Front of the Machine". Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1328, "Lift Group (Stand - 60 Ton)" for more information on Tooling (A).
Note: Raise the front end of the machine enough to provide clearance for the front tire and rim to be installed.
Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g03889702 (1) Tire and Rim Show/hide tableNOTICE The weight of the tire and rim can vary significantly depending on the tire and rim configuration.
- Use a suitable tire handler to install tire and rim (1). The weight of tire and rim (1) is approximately
8618 kg (19000 lb) .Note: The valve stem must face to the outside.
- Position tire and rim (1) onto the wheel assembly.

(C) Loctite C5AShow/hide tableNOTICE Apply Tooling (C) or a light coat of oil onto the wheel studs after the wheel has been fully seated to avoid contamination of the mating surfaces. Anti-seize may be preferred in corrosive environments to make nut removal easier when removing rims. No other anti-seize compound is to be used.
- Apply Tooling (C) or a light coat of oil onto four of the wheel studs that are equally spaced and approximately 90 degrees apart. Install four nuts (3) and four washers (2) to secure tire and rim (1) onto the wheel.
Note: Apply a light coat of oil to the faces of the washers.
- Apply Tooling (C) or a light coat of oil onto the remaining wheel studs.
- Install the remaining nuts (3) and washers (2). Use Tooling (B) to tighten nuts (1) to a torque of
3100 ± 350 N·m (2286 ± 258 lb ft) .Note: Apply a light coat of oil to the faces of the washers.

(5) 8T-4122 Hard Washer
(6) 8T-4779 Bolt - Install three plates (4), three hard washers (5), and three bolts (6).
- Repeat Step 3 through Step 10 to install the tire and rim on the right-hand side.
- Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8417, "Tire Inflation with Nitrogen" for the correct tire inflation procedure.
- After the truck has been fully assembled, align the front wheels. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR8734, "Front Wheel - Align" for the correct procedure
- Lift the front of the truck until the front wheels are off the ground and the strut rods in the suspension cylinders are fully extended.
- Move the wheels to a straight ahead position.
- Measure the distance between the front tires at position (A), which is toward the front of the truck. Mark the measurement locations of distance (A) on the front of each tire.
- Rotate the tires by 180 degrees to position the alignment marks that were created in Step 1.c to position (B), which is toward the back of the truck.
- Measure distance (B) between the alignment marks on the back of each tire.
- Use Table 3 to determine the correct toe-out when the front wheels are off the ground.

Table 3 Correct Toe-Out B = A − 46.0 mm (1.81 inch) - If the difference that was found in Step 1.f is not correct, adjust steering links (3). Use the following procedure to adjust steering links (3) to get the correct toe-out with the front wheels off the ground:

(3) Steering link - Loosen clamp assemblies (1) of steering link (3) on the left side and loosen clamp assemblies (2) of steering link (3) on the right side.
- Use Tooling (D) to turn each steering link (3).
Note: To prevent Tooling (D) from marring the surfaces of steering links (3), place a piece of rubber between the chain and each steering link (3).
Show/hide tableIllustration 10 g01960993 - Turn each steering link (3) to get the correct toe-out.
Note: Be sure that distance (C) equals distance (D) after both steering links have been adjusted.

(A) Distance between the front tires at the front
(B) Distance between the front tires at the back - Use the procedure in the Clamp Positioning to align clamp assemblies (1) and clamp assemblies (2) on steering links (3). Failure to locate the clamp assemblies correctly on steering links (3) could shorten the service life of the steering link assemblies.
- Lower the front of the truck.
- Proper adjustment between position (A) and position (B) yields the correct toe-in when the truck is in normal operation with properly charged suspension cylinders.
- Position clamp assemblies (1) and clamp assemblies (2) on steering links (3). Dimension (E) in Illustration 11 is the maximum distance between the clamp assemblies and the end of steering links (3) on both ends. Dimension (E) is
6.35 ± 1.53 mm (.250 ± .060 inch) .Show/hide tableIllustration 12 g01960813 (1) Clamp assemblies on the left side steering link

(4) Locknut - Align the open portion of clamp assemblies (1) and clamp assemblies (2) with the slots in the ends of steering links (3).
Note: It is important to position the bolts in clamp assemblies (1) and (2) as close to vertical as possible to minimize the chance of contact with the engine coupler pan during normal operation.
- Tighten locknuts (4) of clamp assemblies (1) and clamp assemblies (2).
Note: Refer to the Steering System Specifications, "Steering Linkage and Cylinder Mounting" to find the proper torque for locknuts (4).
Show/hide tableIllustration 13 g01960992 - Be sure that the openings on each side of the clamp assemblies are equal.
Note: Locate the slots in steering link (3) as close to the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions as possible.
