Alternator - Inspect
Alternator Inspection Procedure
Inspect the alternator for the following conditions:
- Proper connections
- Clean ports for cooling airflow
- Proper charging of the battery
- Observe battery voltage during engine operation to evaluate the performance of the alternator.
The alternator regulator also has a built-in diagnostic tri-color LED which indicates the status as follows:
- Solid Green: alternator is producing output
- Flashing Amber: regulator is awake but not rotating
- Solid Amber: low voltage
- Flashing Red: high voltage
Note: Make repairs, if necessary. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for assistance.
