Fuel Filter Is Restricted

Usage:

XQC1600 ME2
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a problem with the fuel filters. Or, use this procedure if any of the following event codes are active.

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
J1939 Code  CDL Code  Code Description  System Response
95-15  E390(1)   Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - least severe (1)   The code is logged.
The filter is becoming clogged. Change the filter at the next regular maintenance.
95-16  E390(2)   Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - moderate severity (2)   The code is logged.
The difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point pressure.
The engine ECM will derate engine power.
Change the fuel filter.
95-0  E390(3)   Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - most severe (3)

Probable Causes

  • Fuel filter element

  • Electrical problem

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Step  Value  Result
1. Active Codes and Logged Codes

A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).

B. Monitor the diagnostic codes on Cat ET. Check for active or logged diagnostic codes. Specifically check for codes that could be associated to a restricted fuel supply.

Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for diagnostic codes to become active.

Engine Logged or Active Codes
Result: A diagnostic code is present.

Repair: Troubleshoot any codes before continuing with this procedure.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

Result: The problem has not been resolved.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Fuel Filter Element

A. Replace the appropriate fuel filter elements for the code.

B. Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information.

C. Restart the engine and check for an active event code for the filter that was changed.

Filter

Result: After starting the engine, the event code is no longer active for the filter that was changed.

STOP

Result: After starting the engine, the event code remained active for the filter that was changed

Proceed to Test Step 3

3. Electrical Problem

A. Inspect the sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.

B. Determine if an associated code is present for a pressure sensor that is related the filter.

Electrical codes

Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.

Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

Result: There is a fault code for a sensor that is related to the filter.

Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test"
