Motori Caterpillar identificiraju se putem serijskih brojeva i brojeva izvedbe. Ti se brojevi navode na pločici sa serijskim brojem motora. Ovlašteni zastupnici tvrtke Caterpillar trebaju ove brojeve kako bi odredili sastavne dijelove motora. To omogućava točnu identifikaciju brojeva zamjenskih dijelova.
Pločica sa serijskim brojem motora nalazi se na lijevoj strani bloka cilindra, iza prednjeg nosača motora.
