Usage:
3176B (9CK) Truck Engines Equipped With A Jake Brake
The 014676 (Jake part number) Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) and 014721 (Jake part number) Jake Brake Hex Jam Nut (2) are used on Jake Brake equipped 3176B Truck Engines and should not be adjusted during preventive maintenance valve adjustment. See the illustration.
The 3176B Truck Engine uses a new "Guideless" exhaust bridge design. To ensure that the exhaust bridge sits level during operation; the Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) adjustment is preset at the factory and does not require further adjustment.
Replacement (If required)
If replacement of the 6I-4584 Exhaust Valve Bridge (3), Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1), or Jake Brake Hex Jam Nut (2) is required; these steps should be followed:
1. Remove Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) and Jake Brake Hex Jam Nut (2) from the Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) [Place Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) in a soft jaw vise].
Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1). Jake Brake Hex Jam Nut (2). Exhaust Valve Bridge (3). Dimension A. Dimension B.
NOTE: Due to the use of 9S-3265 Retaining Compound at assembly, any or all of the above components may require replacement if damaged during disassembly.
2. During assembly, clean Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1), Jake Brake Jam Nut (2), and mating Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) threads with 8T-9011 Component Cleaner. Dry with light air pressure.
3. Apply 6V-1541 Quick Cure Primer to Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) threads, Jake Brake Jam Nut (2) threads, and mating Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) threads. Dry with light air pressure.
4. Apply 9S-3265 Retaining Compound (Loctite 620) to the Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) threads. DO NOT apply excess Retaining Compound. DO NOT allow Retaining Compound to contact the Actuator Pin.
5. Install Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) and Jake Brake Jam Nut (2) into Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) (the 9S-3265 Retaining Compound sets quickly). Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) MUST be adjusted as follows:
A. Place Exhaust Valve Bridge (3) in vise (soft jaws).
B. Measure depth of machined valve surface using a depth gauge. This is Dimension "A". See illustration.
C. Set depth of Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) to Dimension "B" using a depth gauge. Dimension "B" equals Dimension "A" ± 0.13 mm (.005 in).
D. Tighten Jake Brake Jam Nut (2) to a torque of 25 ± 7 N·m (18 ± 5 lb ft).
E. Check depth of Jake Brake Screw/Pin Assembly (1) for proper adjustment (Dimension "B").
