C1.5 and C2.2 Industrial Engines Caterpillar

ARD Is Disabled

Usage:

C1.5 G9N
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a failed Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic trouble codes are active.

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes for ARD Failed to Ignite
J1939 Code  Code Description  Comments
3713-7  DPF Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to System Timeout : Not Responding Properly  The intake temperature at the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) has not increased as expected during an active regeneration.
Diagnostic codes 3484-xx, 168-xx, 3556-6, 4765-xx, 5487-xx, and 6581-6 are not active.
3713-31  DPF Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to System Timeout  The temperature in the Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD) has not increased as expected at the start of an active regeneration.
Diagnostic codes 3484-xx, 168-xx, 3556-6, 5487-xx, and 6581-6 are not active.

System Operation

The code 3713-31 is generated, when the Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that the ARD flame has gone out after igniting.

During a regeneration, the ECM increases the ARD gas temperature in a series of steps. If the DOC intake temperature sensor does not detect a planned temperature increase, a 3713-7 code is generated.

ARD Air Supply

Visually inspect the components for the ARD Air supply. Check for the following faults:

  1. Confirm that there are no kinks in the air lines to restrict the flow.

  2. Confirm that the reed valve is not blocked and can move freely.

  3. Confirm that the air pump belt is tensioned correctly: New belt = 310 N (70 lb), Used belt = 220 N (49.5 lb).

  4. Check if the air filter is blocked. Change filter if maintenance schedule has passed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule".

ARD Fuel Supply

Visually inspect the components for the ARD Fuel supply. Check for the following faults:

  1. Confirm if the electric lift pump is damaged.

  2. Check if the primary fuel filter is blocked. Change filter if maintenance schedule has passed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule".

  3. Check if the secondary fuel filter is blocked. Change filter if maintenance schedule has passed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule".

  4. Confirm that there are no kinks in the fuel lines to restrict the flow.

  5. Confirm that there is no air in the fuel line. Allow the lift pump to circulate fuel around the engine at Key on before cranking the engine.

Battery Voltage

  1. Confirm that the battery voltage is greater than 13V during a regeneration with all of the engine auxiliary components activated.

Aftertreatment Temperature Sensors (3713-7 only)

Visually inspect the Aftertreatment temperature sensors for the following fault.

  1. Confirm that the Aftertreatment temperature sensors are located in the correct position: DOC In (gray), DPF In (black) and DPF Out (white connector).
