New Exhaust Manifold Bolt Tightening Procedure

3116 Truck Engines

The Service Manual For 3116 Diesel Truck Engine, SEBR0550, has incorrect exhaust manifolt bolt tightening information in the Specification section and the Dissassembly And Assembly section. Make note of the "Exhaust Manifold Bolt Tightening Procedure" that follows on Page 11, in the Exhaust Manifold specification information, and on Page 6-21, in the Remove and Install Exhaust Manifold information.

Exhaust Manifold Bolt Tightening Procedure


Exhaust manifold bolt tightening sequence.

1. Apply a thin coat of 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts.

2. Tighten all the bolts in numerical sequence as shown in Illustrations and 2, to a torque of 4 ±1 N·m (35 ± 9 lb in).

3. Tighten all the bolts again in numerical sequence to a torque of 45 ± 5 N·m (33 ± 4 lb ft). See the illustration.

4. Bend the lock tabs over the flats of the bolt heads. If necessary, tighten the bolt more until a flat on the bolt head lines up with a lock tab.
