Surface Marks On Roller Bearing Cages Are Not Cracks

Usage:

All Applications

Some roller bearings have been replaced in the field because of what appeared to be cracks on the sides of the bearing cages. The cages were not cracked, but had surface marks on the sides. These marks are caused by the method some manufacturers use to grip the cage for machining. See illustration.

Harmless surface marks on side of bearing cage.

The marks are caused by knurls in the chuck that grip the cage during the machining process, and will appear on any size bearing gripped by this type of a chuck. There can be as many as 12 marks at intervals. Such marks are superficial and do not affect the quality of the bearing.
