Extraction Tools For "Live Oil Sampling "

Usage:

Application:

Pressurized oil systems on many Caterpillar products are factory equipped with sampling valves to quickly extract samples. Pressurized systems include engine lubrication systems.

The following items are provided to obtain oil samples for Caterpillar's S ·O·S programs.

8T9208 Probe
8T9190 Bottle Group
1U7620 Container
8C3446 Valve (7/16"-20 external thd.)
3J7354 O-Ring Seal
8C3345 Valve (M10 × 1 external thd.)
8T7876 O-ring Seal
8C3445 Dust Cap (Engine)
8C3447 Dust Cap (Transmission)
8C3451 Dust Cap (Hydraulics)
8C6427 Adapter (1/4" NPTF ext. × 7/16"-20 thd int)
6V7529 Adapter (1/8" NPTF ext. × 7/16"-20 internal thd.)

The 8T9208 Probe can be attached to a 1/4" ID Rubber Hose (6K0713 Hose - 9" long or any desired length cut from bulk 5P6442 Hose or equivalent 100R6 type high temperature, low pressure hose). The 8T9208 Probe and Hose connected to a waste container provide a method to purge or flush the 8C3446 or 8C3345 Valves prior to obtaining the desired oil sample using 8T9190 Bottle Group. Approximately 1/2 to 1 ounce of expelled fluid purges the valves.

The 8T9190 Bottle Group is sealed in a plastic bag with printed instructions. See illustration. The bottle group is ready to use when removed from the plastic bag. The bottle should only be removed from the sealed plastic bag when the sample is ready to be taken. This will reduce possible contamination to the sample. When obtaining the sample, fill the bottle 3/4 full. Discard the bottle's probe and tube. Seal the bottle by snapping the cap-cover to the bottle cap. Labels (obtained locally) for identifying the sample should be attached to the bottle.

The 1U7620 Container is available to mail the oil sample to the laboratory. The laboratory provides the mailing label that also seals the container.

The 8C3446 Valve with 3J7354 O-Ring Seal are currently being applied to Caterpillar products beginning with the larger products progressing through medium sized.

The 8C3345 Valve with 8T7876 O-Ring Seal are available for retrofit and applications on future production installations requiring metric threads.

The 8C3445, 8C3447 and 8C3451 Dust Caps provide protective covers for the "live-oil sampling" valves. The dust caps have symbols embossed on the cap to indicate valve application on the product. The symbols indicate engine, transmission and hydraulic oil systems. The hydraulic dust cap is used for implement, steering and brake systems.

The 8C6427 and 6V7529 Adapters provide a method to retrofit the 8C3446 Valve to earlier products.

Benefits:

Precisely located live oil sampling valves on the product satisfy engineering, manufacturing and service requirements. Valve locations provide oil sample confidence and continuity. Comparative data of live oil samples is more reliable because the sample is taken from a continuous flow of oil at a repeatable location.

A probe is available that allows the valve to be quickly flushed prior to taking oil samples.

The sample bottle group is sealed in a plastic bag to insure cleanliness. Using the 8T9190 Bottle Group results in minimal exposure to atmospheric contamination compared to suction sampling methods. When the bottle is removed from the plastic bag, it is ready for use. After taking the oil sample, the probe and tube are separated from the bottle cap and discarded. The cap cover is snapped to the bottle cap, sealing the bottle.

A mailing container is available so the oil sample can be conveniently mailed to the testing laboratory.

Live oil sampling is a fast, economical and clean method of obtaining oil samples from pressurized systems. Pressurized systems include engine, transmission, and hydraulic systems. Systems may also include hydraulic steering or other hydraulic systems that are isolated or considered separate pressurized systems.

Live oil sampling is 10 to 20 times faster than sampling oil from nonpressurized systems. It takes approximately 10 seconds per port to flush the valve and take an oil sample. The engine should be at low idle rpm when the oil samples are taken and all compartments should be at normal operating temperature. Downtime is further minimized when live oil samples are obtained because the engine does not have to be turned off.
