排气流入涡轮机壳体的排气进口。 排气继而推动涡轮机叶轮 (8) 的叶片。
来自空气滤清器的清洁空气由于压缩机叶轮 (4) 的旋转作用被吸入压缩机壳体的进气口。 压缩机叶轮叶片压缩进气。 压缩可使发动机发出更大功率，这是因为压缩使得发动机能够以更高的效率燃烧更多的燃油。
涡轮增压器的最大转速受控于发动机输油量的电子控制。 发动机运转时所处的海拔高度也将控制涡轮增压器的最大转速。
涡轮增压器中的轴承 (5) 和轴承 (7) 使用发动机机油进行压力润滑。 机油经由进油管被输送到上部的进油口 (6)。 机油继而经由中段内的油道润滑轴承。 机油从底部的出油口 (9) 流出。 此机油然后通过排油管 (2) 流回到飞轮壳内。
