An improved guide spring and valve lifter are available for the engines that are listed above. The guide spring and valve lifter have been strengthened to withstand the torsional loads that are experienced during operating conditions.
The new 384-4171 Guide Spring and 384-4172 Valve Lifter As are a direct replacement for the existing 304-5260 Guide Spring and 163-2437 Valve Lifter As in the engines listed above.

The new lifter clip and follower must be used together. Do not use the previous clips with the new follower. Severe engine damage will occur.
The cylinder block updates detailed in Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF9008, "Reworking the Cylinder Block for Better Alignment of the Lifter Follower Clip" is not required to allow installation of the improved lifter clip and follower.
This change is adaptable back to first production on the above listed engines. This procedure should be applied only during complete engine disassembly that allows for correct machining, fixturing, and thorough cleaning of the cylinder block before reassembly.
