Proper Installation of Exhaust Bellows for C175-16 Generator Set Engines {1059}

Usage:

C175-16 WYB
Generator Set:
C175-16 (S/N: WYB1-UP)

Several exhaust bellows assemblies are used on C175 applications. The bellows transfers exhaust gases, compensate for slight misalignment between mating parts, and allow for relative movement between the mating parts. If the bellows are not installed properly, or if there is gross misalignment between the mating parts, the bellows will fail prematurely.

Example of premature failure due to misalignment.

Note: These guidelines are recommended any time that the exhaust system is disturbed for service and/or replacement purposes, regardless of machine age.

Typical example

(1) Center line between the mating surfaces.

(2) Turbo side of the bellows

(3) Bellows

(4) End of the air duct

The alignment of the bellows is important. Two sealing surfaces that do not align with each other have improper lateral alignment. The proper lateral adjustment is shown in illustration 2.

Visually check centerline (1) to determine whether ends (2) and (4) are properly aligned. Do not force the bellows into the position. Do not force end (2) or end (4) into bellows (3) .

Be sure that the bellows are assembled in a relaxed state.

  • Alignment is key.

  • Assemble the bellows loosely.

  • Finger tighten fasteners.

  • No observed flexing of the bellows.

  • Convolutes are parallel.

  • No dings, dents, or gouges in the bellows.

  • Always adjust mating components for best alignment before the final torquing is started.
