J1939 Code and Description | Conditions that Generate the Code | System Response |
630-2 Programmed Parameter Fault : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect | The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that one or more of the programmable parameters have not been programmed. | The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the engine to low idle.
The code remains active while the parameter is unprogrammed. The code will never be logged. |
If a programmable parameter has not been programmed, the ECM will generate a 630-2 diagnostic code. The parameter that is not programmed will be listed under the code. The unprogrammed parameters will be set to default. Certain aspects of the engine performance and engine monitoring may be affected.
If "Injector Trim" is displayed below a 630-2 diagnostic code on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Trim File - Install".
System configuration parameters are parameters that affect emissions, power of the engine, and other features that define the characteristics of the engine subsystems. The parameters are preprogrammed at the factory. You may need to reprogram the system configuration parameters if the ECM is replaced and/or if you reprogram the engine rating. You do not need to reprogram the system configuration parameters if you replace the flash file. Cat ET can be used to view the values for these parameters. Certain system configuration parameters are stamped on the engine information plate.
This parameter allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM in order to identify the installation. A maximum of 17 characters may be entered in the field. This parameter is only for reference by the customer. This parameter is not required.
Program the "Engine Serial Number" to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate.
Note: When you are requesting factory passwords, always use the engine serial number that is resident in the ECM.
The "ECM Serial Number" is stored in the memory of the ECM. The "ECM Serial Number" can be accessed by the use of Cat ET.
This parameter identifies the part number of the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.
This parameter identifies the release date of the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.
This parameter identifies the description of the application for the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.
The rating number corresponds to the selected set of performance maps that has been selected for this application. There may be more than one set of performance maps that are available for this engine. All of the maps are resident in the flash file for the engine.
This parameter specifies the rated power of the engine.
This parameter specifies the rated peak torque of the engine.
The test spec identifies the specific set of test specifications that are used to benchmark the performance of new engines in the test cell. Use this number to retrieve data that is related to the engine specifications from the Technical Marketing Information System (TMI).
The following information can be retrieved from TMI:
- "As shipped consists"
- "Engine test specifications"
- "Systems data"
- "Physical data"
- "Gasket kit data"
- "Reman parts"
- "Performance data"
A link to TMI can be found on the web site for the Service Information System (SIS).
Top Engine Limit (TEL) allows the full load (rated hp) speed to be programmed within the top engine speed range. This top engine speed range has a lower and upper limit and will span either 300 rpm or 400 rpm. TEL and high idle determine the engine overrun on the power curve for the engine. The overrun portion of the power curve will change as TEL and high idle are modified. The slope of the overrun curve is determined by the difference between TEL and high idle.
Low Idle Speed is a programmable parameter that allows the customer to program the engine low idle speed. Low idle speed is the minimum allowable operating speed for the engine.
The high idle speed specifies the no load maximum speed for the engine. The high idle speed must be greater than the TEL and less than the maximum speed of the engine.

Engine Configuration Parameters
This parameter must be programmed to "Continuous Flow" for a continuous flow solenoid and valve assembly.
When this parameter is enabled, the ECM accepts an analog input that allows an external governor to determine the fueling of the engine. When the engine is in direct fuel control mode, the engine operation is independent of all of the other strategies for the engine. Operation of the internal governor for the ECM is bypassed.
This feature is used to shut down the engine during periods of extended engine idle. This feature will save the engine from the accumulation of service hours and the feature will conserve fuel.
Engine Idle Shutdown Minimum Ambient Air Temperature
The idle shutdown feature will not be enabled by the ECM unless the ambient air temperature is above this setting.
Engine Idle Shutdown Maximum Ambient Air Temperature
The idle shutdown feature will not be enabled by the ECM unless the ambient air temperature is below this setting.

If more than one speed input device or method is used, the ECM arbitrates between the different input devices. The ECM compares multiple speed input signals and identifies the signal with the highest priority. The highest priority speed input signal is the signal on which the ECM will respond.
This parameter defines the speed for the engine when the intermediate engine speed switch is activated. This parameter can be programmed to any engine speed between the "Low Idle Speed" and the "Top Engine Limit". The ECM records data that is related to equipment maintenance. The ECM activates the maintenance indicator lamp when a scheduled maintenance is due. The maintenance indicator lamp is reset when the maintenance clear switch is closed to ground. The maintenance interval can be based on operating hours or on fuel consumption. The ECM provides information that pertains to maintenance intervals and the last maintenance that was performed.
Program the maintenance indicator mode to the preferred maintenance mode for the engine. If the maintenance indicator mode is set to “Auto Fuel” or “Auto Hours”, then the “PM1 Interval” will not be used.
Set this parameter to the optimum maintenance interval for the engine.

Changing the FLS may void your engine warranty or make your engine non-compliant with applicable emissions regulations. FLS represents the adjustment to the fuel system made at the factory to set the engine to a factory-defined nominal power. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information plate. Factory passwords are required to change FLS.
Changing the FTS may void your engine warranty or make your engine non-compliant with applicable emissions regulations. FTS is like FLS in that FTS is a calibration parameter set at the factory. Factory passwords are required to change FTS.
