Caterpillar generator sets are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Identification Plates that are mounted on the generator set.

Generator Identification (1)

When service to the generator is required, the information that is given on this plate should be used. The generator identification and information plate includes the following information: serial number, model number and the rating of the generator set. The generator set consists of the engine and the generator. All pertinent generator data is also included on the plate in order to provide the information that is necessary to order parts.

Engine Identification (2)

When service to the engine is required, the information that is given on this plate should be used. The engine identification plate includes the following information: setpoint of the engine altitude derate , horsepower, high idle, full load engine speed and fuel settings . The engine information plate also contains other important information about the engine. All pertinent engine data is also included on the plate in order to provide the information that is necessary to order parts.

The engine identification plate is located on the right side of the engine on the oil cooler.

Engine Serial Number (3)

The engine serial number plate is located on the left side of the engine block.

The following information is stamped on the Serial Number Plate: engine serial number, model and arrangement number.
